Plymouth State Defeats Southern Maine 8-1
GORHAM, Maine -- Freshman Mackenzie Colby (Southport, Maine/Boothbay Region) and sophomore Courtney Jordan (Portland, Maine/Westbrook) combined to win the University of Southern Maine's lone point in an 8-1 decision against Plymouth State University in a Little East Conference women's tennis match Tuesday afternoon at the Gorham High School courts.
Colby and Jordan upset the PSU tandem of sophomore Irene Ireme (Concord, N.H.) and senior Rachel Gustafson (Belchertown, Mass.) in a tiebreaker, 9-8 (0), to take the number one doubles match. Unfortunately for the Huskies, that would be their only point as the Panthers took the other two doubles matches to take an early 2-1 lead.
The Panthers then swept through the six singles matches to pull away. Sophomores Megan Wallace (Moultonborough, N.H.) and Kelley Corson (Exeter, N.H./St. Thomas Aquinas), who combined to win the number three doubles match 8-3, won their number two and three singles matches in straight sets. Rookie Alex Dunn (Jaffrey, N.H.) and sophomore Megan Wheeler (Manchester, N.H.) matched Wallace and Corson winning at number two doubles 8-3 and sweeping through their number five and six singles matches.
With their second straight victory, the Panthers moved over the .500 mark to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in conference play. The winless Huskies dropped their fifth straight match to fall to 0-5 and 0-3 in LEC matches.
Southern Maine will host Thomas College on Thursday (4:00 p.m.) for a non-conference match at GHS. Plymouth State is off until Saturday (1:00 p.m.) when it travels to the University of Massachusetts Boston for an LEC match.
