#16 Southern Maine Blanks Wheaton 9-0

NORTON, Mass. -- Freshman Henry Curran (South Portland, Maine) and senior Dan Kinnon (Londonderry, N.H.) combined for a five-hit shutout as the University of Southern Maine defeated Wheaton College 9-0 in a non-conference game Sunday afternoon at Sidell Stadium.

The win was the third straight for the 16th-ranked Huskies and gave them a sweep of the teams' home-and-home series this season.  The Huskies improved their overall record to 21-9.  The Lyons have dropped three straight games and fall to 24-10.

Curran went 6 1/3 innings allowing four hits and two walks while striking out five to earn his second win of the season.  Kinnon came on in the seventh to go the final 2 2/3 innings to earn his first save of the season.

Southern Maine was nursing a 1-0 lead going into the final two innings before erupting for five runs in the eighth and three more in the ninth.

The Huskies took the lead in the second inning as sophomore Sam Stauble (Harrison, Maine/Bridgton Academy) led off with a single, advanced to third on an infield error, and scored on an outfield error for an unearned run.

Freshman Kip Richard (Kennebunk, Maine) ignited the eighth-inning outburst with a two-run single following base hits by junior Paul McDonough (Wells, Maine) and Stauble, and a sacrifice bunt from senior Jake Glauser (Goffstown, N.H.).  After an infield error, rookie Jake Dexter (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) stroked a two-run double to left-center field to score sophomores Nick Volger (Portland, Maine), who was pinch running for Richard, and Nick Bowie (South Paris, Maine/Oxford Hills).  Dexter scored the fifth run of the inning on a single by sophomore Brandon Martins (Manorville, N.Y.).

USM added three insurance runs in the ninth as McDonough tripled and scored on a Stauble sacrifice fly.  A two-out walk to sophomore Kyle Heath (Westbrook, Maine) was followed by a two-run homer to left field by Bowie.

Martins led the Huskies' 11-hit attack with three singles.  McDonough had a triple, a single and scored two runs, Jake Dexter had a double, a single and two RBI, and Stauble had two singles and scored twice.

Junior Zachary Goodwin-Boyd (Florence, Mass./Northampton) had a triple and a single for the Lyons.  Senior starting pitcher Jordan Jenkins (Scituate, Mass./Norwell) was the tough-luck loser.  Jenkins went four innings allowing one unearned run on two hits and no walks while striking out three.

Southern Maine's next game will be on Tuesday (3:30 p.m.) against Little East Conference foe, the University of Massachusetts Boston.  Wheaton has a non-conference game at Wesleyan University on Tuesday (4:00 p.m.).
