Southern Maine Rallies, Downs Colby in 11 Innings, 10-7
WATERVILLE, Maine -- Senior Sam Dexter (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) broke a 7-7 tie with a bases loaded triple in the top of the 11th inning to give the 18th-ranked University of Southern Maine Huskies a 10-7 victory over the Colby College Mules Wednesday afternoon at Coombs Field.
The win extended the Huskies' winning streak to eight games and improved their overall record to 15-5. The Mules have lost their last four games falling to 5-14 overall.
The Huskies rallied from 6-3 and 7-5 deficits with two runs in the eighth and two in the ninth to force extra innings.
In the eighth, junior Paul McDonough (Wells, Maine), who had three hits and three RBI in the game, had an RBI single to bring in the first run. The second run scored on a bases loaded walk to senior Jake Glauser (Goffstown, N.H.). Colby scored a single run in the home half of the frame on back-to-back two-out singles from rookies Matt Mitchell (Wayzata, Minn.) and Ryan Quinn (Lagrangeville, N.Y.) and an outfield error to make it 7-5.
In the ninth, the Huskies tied the game an RBI single from freshman Kip Richard (Kennebunk, Maine) and a sacrifice fly from sophomore Tom Budrewicz (Boxford, Mass./Masconomet Regional).
In the 11th, a leadoff single by freshman Kyle O'Connor (Lynn, Mass./Lynn English) and a sacrifice bunt by senior Nick DiBiase (Portland, Maine/Deering) put the go ahead run at second. The Mules got the second out, but freshman Jake Dexter (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) was hit by a pitch, and sophomore Jack Sylvia [Glastonbury, Conn./Dartmouth (MA)] followed with a single loading the bases for Sam Dexter. The 2015 NCAA Division III Player of the Year hit a 2-1 pitch off losing pitcher Jake Connelly (North Attleboro, Mass.) to clear the bases giving the Huskies a 10-7 lead. The triple extended Dexter's hitting streak to 20 games.
Jake Dexter pitched the final two innings for USM to earn his second win of the season. The rookie right-hander gave up no runs on one hit and struck out one.
Colby took a 6-2 lead with six unearned runs in the second inning. The Mules benefitted from five USM errors in the inning.
Sophomore Sam Stauble (Harrison, Maine/Bridgton Academy) paced the Huskies' 15-hit attack going 4-for-7 at the plate. McDonough had a double and two singles, and O'Connor came off the bench to contribute a double, a single and two runs scored.
Mitchell, seniors Tommy Forese (New Canaan, Conn.) and Andy Currier (Santa Monica, Calif.) and junior Andrew Della Volpe (Concord, Mass.) had two hits apiece for the Mules.
Southern Maine will take on local rival Saint Joseph's College tomorrow (3:30 p.m.) at the USM Baseball Stadium. Colby hosts NESCAC rival Bowdoin College on Friday (3:00 p.m.).
