Huskies Fall Short in Season Finale
DANBURY, Conn. -- The Western Connecticut State University women's tennis team closed the 2016 season taking a 5-4 Little East Conference victory over visiting University of Southern Maine Sunday afternoon.
The win snapped an eight-match losing streak for the Colonials who finished the season 4-10 overall and 1-7 in the conference. The Huskies finished the season 1-11 overall and winless in eight conference matches.
Western Connecticut took a 2-1 lead when seniors Karen Velez (Danbury, Conn.) and Carine Jacqué pulled out a 9-7 win over the USM duo of senior Liz Martin (Naugatuck, Conn./Woodland Regional) and sophomore Margaret Smith (Farmingdale, Maine/Gardiner Area) at number two doubles.
Rookie Emma Chapman (Danbury, Conn.) and junior Carole Allers (Wilton, Conn./Meridian (Idaho)) posted an 8-0 win for the Colonials at number one doubles while USM earned a point on the strength of an 8-2 win at number three doubles from freshman Gabby Brooks (Palermo, Maine/Messalonskee) and senior Rikki Demoranville (Madawaska, Maine).
Chapman, Allers and Jacqué took the top three singles matches to clinch the win for the Colonials. For the Huskies, sophomore Courtney Jordan (Portland, Maine/Westbrook), Smith and sophomore Joanna Scheidegger (Lyss, Switzerland) took the bottom three singles matches.
