Southern Maine Falls at #5/#6 Amherst 4-1

AMHERST, Mass. -- Seniors Erin Martin (Canton, Mass.) and Eileen Harris (Winnetka, Ill.) each scored a pair of goals as the #5/#6th-ranked Amherst College women's ice hockey defeated the visiting University of Southern Maine Huskies 4-1 in a non-conference Sunday afternoon at Orr Rink.

Martin scored the lone goal of the first period late in the stanza, and added an insurance marker in the third period.  Harris scored what proved to be the game-wining goal while Amherst was on the power play in the second period, and tallied the final goal late in the third period.  Sophomore Sabrina Dobbins (Bedford, N.H.) ran her unbeaten record to 7-0 making 25 saves.

Junior Katie Couture (Harrisville, R.I.) scored the Huskies lone goal in the latter stages of the third period.  Sophomore goalie Courtney Davis (Woburn, Mass.) stopped 31 shots.

Martin snapped a scoreless deadlock with 1:17 to play in the opening period lighting the lamp with a shot into the top left corner for an unassisted goal.  The goal was Martin's seventh of the season.

Midway through the middle period, Amherst went on the power play and made USM pay.  Harris tipped home a shot from senior Caroline Bomstein (Washington, D.C.) at 10:56 for her second goal of the season and a 2-0 Amherst lead.

The score remained 2-0 until the final six minutes of play.  Martin's second goal of the game, assisted by Harris and rookie Katelyn Pantera (North Branford, Conn.) at 14:47, made it 3-0.  The goal came shortly after USM senior Cassandra Sherman (North Smithfield, R.I.) clanked a shot off the post at the other end.

Couture got the Huskies on the board at 16:59 converting from Sherman and junior McKenna Russell (Stoughton, Mass.).  Harris closed the scoring with her second of the game at 17:59 assisted by Pantera.

The undefeated Purple and White, one of two remaining undefeated teams in Division III, improved to 8-0-0 overall.  The Huskies dropped to 2-7-1 overall after suffering their second straight loss.  Amherst finished the game outshooting Southern Maine 35-26.

Southern Maine returns home to host Division One independent Sacred Heart University for a two-game series on Tuesday (4:00 p.m.) and Wednesday (4:00 p.m.).  Amherst looks to extend its unbeaten streak on Friday (7:00 p.m.) and Saturday (3:00 p.m.) hosting nationally-ranked Middlebury College for two games.
