Huskies Host Sacred Heart for Two-Game Series on Tuesday and Wednesday

GORHAM, Maine -- Rookie Brenna Sullivan (Lockport, Ill.) scored with 2:19 remaining in regulation to give #6/#10 Amherst College a 3-2 victory over the University of Southern Maine in a non-conference women's ice hockey game Sunday afternoon at the USM Ice Arena.

The win extended the Lord Jeffs winning streak to three games, and improved their overall record to 8-1-1.  The Huskies dropped their fourth straight game to slip to 2-7-1 overall.

With time winding down and overtime looming on the horizon, Sullivan picked up a loose puck along the left-wing boards after some hard work by seniors Emily Flom (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.) and Madeline Tank (Winnetka, Ill.) to skate in alone on USM senior goalie Liz Bergstrom (Chanhassen, Minn.).  Sullivan beat Bergstrom with a shot from about 10 feet out for her fifth goal of the season.

Sophomore Katie Couture (Harrisville, R.I.) had tied the game for the Huskies midway through the third period when she stepped around an Amherst defender on a faceoff and beat rookie goaltender Sabrina Dobbins (Bedford, N.H.) for an unassisted short-handed goal.  The goal was Couture's team-leading fourth of the season.

Amherst scored the only goal of the opening period in the final minute of play as Flom tipped a shot from sophomore Lynndy Smith (Glendale, Ariz.) up over Bergstrom's right shoulder.  Junior Erin Martin (Canton, Mass.) picked up the other assist.

Southern Maine battled back in the second period to tie the game when senior Talya Bent (Cranston, R.I.) fired a shot past Dobbins at 3:52.  Sophomore Lynn Kozlowski (Stoneham, Mass.) picked up the lone assist with some tenacious forechecking and the pass to Bent.

Less than three minutes later, the Lord Jeffs retook the lead as Flom took advantage of a Huskies defensive zone turnover to go in one-on-one against Bergstrom.  Flom beat Bergstrom with a shot along the ice for her sixth goal of the season.

Bergstrom played a strong game in goal for the Huskies making 27 saves and keeping the home side within striking distance of the nationally-ranked Lord Jeffs.  Dobbins picked up her fourth win of the season stopping 10 shots.  The Lord Jeffs finished the game with a 30-12 advantage in shots on goal.

Southern Maine will take on Division One independent Sacred Heart University in a two-game series at the USM Ice Arena this Tuesday (4:00 p.m.) and Wednesday (4:00 p.m.).  Amherst returns to the state of Maine this Friday (7:00 p.m.) and Saturday (3:00 p.m.) for a two-game NESCAC series at Colby College.
