Box Score Huskies Get Two Short-Handed Tallies
HENNIKER, N.H. -- The University of Southern Maine women's ice hockey team scored three unanswered goals, including two short-handed, in the third period to erase a 2-1 deficit and post a 4-2 victory over New England College in an ECAC Women's East game Saturday afternoon.
The win was the second straight for the Huskies, and improved their record to 6-11-1 overall and 4-6-1 in the league. The Pilgrims, winless in their last 11 games, fell to 1-17-1 overall and 1-9-1 in league play.
Trailing 2-1 entering the third period, scored the tying goal at 2:20 when sophomore Ally Vanidestine (Bangor, Maine) tallied her third goal of the season. Senior Julia Pearl (Essex Jct., Vt.) and rookie Tatiana Doucette (Lynn, Mass.) picked up the assists on the play.
Sophomore Lynn Kozlowski (Stoneham, Mass.) scored the first USM short-handed marker at 8:09, converting a pass from Pearl, to give the Huskies their first lead in the game. Pearl would add another short-handed marker at 18:13, assisted by Vanidestine, to pad the Huskies' lead.
The teams traded goals in the opening period as NEC took a 1-0 lead midway through on senior Aubrey Fischer's (Syracuse, N.Y.) third goal of the season. Junior Chelsea Boucher (Gilford, N.H.) tied the score for USM at 16:52 with her second goal of the campaign set up by sophomore Katie Couture (Harrisville, R.I.) and junior Cassandra Sherman (North Smithfield, R.I.).
In the opening minute of the second period, junior Lindsey Stewart (South Windsor, Conn.) gave the Pilgrims the lead again with the only score of the period.
USM senior goalie Liz Bergstrom (Chanhassen, Minn.) earned her sixth win of the season stopping 20 shots. Senior Lauren Hopps (Green Bay, Wis.) recorded 28 stops in the NEC cage before heading to the bench with 51 seconds to play for the extra skater.
Southern Maine is on the road Tuesday night (7:00 p.m.) traveling to in-state foe Colby College for a non-conference game. New England College is off until Friday (4:00 p.m.) when it hosts Saint Anselm College in an ECAC Women's East game.
