Castleton Holds Off Southern Maine 5-4
GORHAM, Maine -- Sophomore Katie Quinn (Hollis, Maine/Bonny Eagle) earned a pair points, but it was not enough as the University of Southern Maine women's tennis team fell to Castleton State College, 5-4, in a non-conference match Sunday at the Costello Field House. The was moved inside after the morning's rain made the Gorham High School court unplayable.
The Huskies dropped their third one-point decision of the season, and second in four days, to slip to 2-6 overall. The Spartans improved their overall mark to 7-2 with their second straight win.
Quinn took a straight-sets win over senior Kaydeen Juaire (Berkshire, Vt./Richford) at number five singles, and teamed with sophomore Emily Collins (St. David/Madawaska) to take the point at number three doubles from Juaire and senior Taylor Reynolds (Westford, Vt./Essex).
Freshman Shannon Haggerty (Woodstock, N.Y./Northwood) and senior Olga McIntyre (Winhall, Vt./Burr and Burton) each earned two points for the Spartans. Haggerty teamed with senior Meghan Susslin (St. Albans, Vt./BFA-St. Albans) for an 8-6 win at number one doubles and took the point at number four singles with a 7-6 (3), 6-1 over sophomore Liz Martin (Naugatuck, Conn./Woodland Regional). McIntyre earned a singles point at number three with a straight sets victory over junior Courtney Aldrich (Lewiston, Maine). McIntyre combined with junior Sara Novenstern (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greely) to defeat Aldrich and Martin 8-5 at number two doubles.
Trailing 2-1 after the doubles matches, Southern Maine grabbed two singles points at the top of the ladder as juniors Sarah Hill (Topsham, Maine/Mt. Ararat) and Molly Gallagher (South Portland, Maine/Deering) earned straight set wins at numbers one and two, respectively. However, the Huskies were only able to come up with Quinn's point in the final four singles matches as the Spartans hung on.
Southern Maine will host the University of Massachusetts Boston in a Little East Conference match on Tuesday (3:00 p.m.). Castleton State is off until Saturday (1:00 p.m.) when it hosts in-state rival Johnson State College in a North Atlantic Conference match.
