Box Score 2 DANBURY, Conn. – Sophomore Renee Trottier (Biddeford, Maine) had an outstanding .500 hitting percentage on nine kills in 18 attempts and added 17 assists to help lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 3-1 win (25-18, 25-14, 22-25, 25-19) over the John Jay College Bloodhounds Saturday afternoon at Feldman Arena. With the win over John Jay, Southern Maine salvaged the split after falling to Western Connecticut 3-0 (25-19, 25-17 and 25-21).
Western also defeated John Jay 3-0 (25-11, 25-10 and 25-13) capturing two wins to improve to 13-3 overall. With Western's win over USM, the Colonials are now 2-0 in the LEC. Southern Maine stands at 13-4 overall and 0-2 in the conference. With the pair of losses John Jay is now 2-11.
Trottier was one of several strong performances for the Huskies in the win over John Jay. Freshman Amanda Keppel (Springfield, Pa./Merion Mercy) added a match-high 12 kills and 15 digs, while sophomore Jessica Garrett (Waterboro, Maine/Palo Verde (NV)) tossed in five kills, and three digs. Sophomore Demi Ruder (Clifton, Colo./Central) had 10 digs, helping keep John Jay to a .069 hitting percentage.
In the opener against Western Connecticut, Keppel paced USM with nine kills and seven digs. Western junior Heather Williams (Kingston, N.Y.) was swung for an amazing .684 hitting percentage on 13 kills in 19 attempts without an error to pace the Colonials. Freshman Karissa Smith (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Eastern) added 11 kills and 12 digs.
Southern Maine hosts Gordon College on Thursday (7 p.m.) in a non-conference match. John Jay hosts St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) on Tuesday (7 p.m.) and Western Connecticut travels to Johnson & Wales on Friday (6:00 p.m.).
