GORHAM, Maine – Sophomore Sadie Campanella (Chepachet, R.I./Ponaganset) and freshman Jorgie Martin (Smithfield, R.I.) battled to a 9-8 (2) win at first doubles to lead the Rhode Island College Anchormen to a 7-2 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference women's tennis match Saturday afternoon at the Gorham High School tennis courts.
Earning its sixth straight win, Rhode Island College remains undefeated at 6-0 and 1-0 in the conference. The loss is the second straight for the Huskies who fall to 3-2 overall and 0-2 in the Little East.
Campanella and Martin defeated the USM tandem of seniors Mary Morin (Windham, Maine/Portland) and Emily Boutin (Old Town, Maine) as RIC took a 3-0 lead after the doubles points. Junior Chelsea Brown (Wallingford, Conn./Sheehan) took a 6-4, 6-1 win at second singles over USM Jenna Willey, while sophomore Tressa Cannata (Cranston, R.I./Cranston West) downed Boutin 6-4, 6-2 at third singles to help RIC secure the LEC win.
Moran earned a 6-1, 1-6, 6-1 win over Campanella at first singles, while sophomore Molly Gallagher (South Portland, Maine/Deering) scored the Huskies' second point with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-0 win at fourth singles against RIC freshman Julie Reddy (Greenville, R.I./Smithfield).
Southern Maine hosts Johnson State on Sunday (12:00 p.m.). Rhode Island College hosts Emerson College on Tuesday (4:00 p.m.).
