Box Score Southern Maine Falls to Wisconsin-Stevens Point 13-8
AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- Sophomores Nick Prebelski (Green Bay, Wis.) and Luke Watson (Appleton, Wis.) combined for 5.1 innings of three-hit relief pitching as the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point came from behind to defeat the University of Southern Maine 13-8 in a non-conference game on Sunday.
The win was the second straight for the Pointers and improves their overall record to 5-2. The Huskies, now 3-2 on their nine-game Florida trip, slip to 6-3 overall.
UWSP spotted Southern Maine a 6-0 advantage before rallying for three runs in the second inning, and five more in the fourth to take the lead for good.
Prebelski came on in relief of freshman starter Ben Messenger (Green Bay, Wis.) in the fourth to stem the Huskies' offense, going 3.1 allowing three hits and one run to earn his first win of the season. Watson pitched two perfect innings to pick up the save.
Senior Ryan Schilter (West Bend, Ind.) led the Pointers' 18-hit attack with a double, two singles and four RBI. Sophomore Riley Spetz (Sevastopol, Wis.) also had a double and two singles, and rookie Brandon Kranz (Waukesha, Wis.) had three singles. Eight of the nine USWP batters had at least one hit.
Senior Tucker White (Deerfield, N.H./Coe-Brown Northwood) had two triples, a single and three RBI to pace the Huskies. Classmate Anthony Pisani (Cheshire, Conn./Notre Dame) had a double, single and scored three runs. Junior Luke Hammond (Rangeley, Maine/Deering), the second of five Huskies hurlers, was saddled with the loss.
The Huskies raced to a 5-0 lead in the opening inning as White had an RBI triple, and senior Nick Grady (Whitefield, Maine/Erskine Academy) followed with an RBI single. Later in the inning, junior Troy Thibodeau (Danvers, Mass./New Hampton) had a two-run single. Junior Chris Bernard (Scarborough, Maine) scored the final run when Thibodeau got caught in a rundown on an attempted double steal.
USM added a run in the second on White's RBI single before UWSP cut the lead in half with three runs in its turn at bat.
In the fourth, White's second triple of the game, and the 20th of his career, drove in Pisani to give the Huskies a 7-3 lead.
The Pointers took the lead for good in the fourth with five run on six hits. Schilter ignited the outburst with a two-run single. Spetz drove in the fifth run with an RBI single.
Schilter had a two-run double in the fifth, and senior Sean Gerber (Stoughton, Wis.) drove in Schilter with a single. All three runs were unearned.
The Huskies inched closer nicking Prebelski for a single run in the sixth on an RBI single by sophomore Jake Glauser (Goffstown, N.H.) that scored Pisani, but got no closer.
Southern Maine continues its Florida swing on Monday (2:00 p.m.) playing the University of Scranton. UWSP takes on DePauw University on Monday (12:45 p.m.)
