FITCHBURG, Mass.  – Sophomore Jessica Boghosian (Belgrad, Maine/Messalonskee) scored the game-winning goal just 51 seconds into the overtime period to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 5-4 overtime win over the Fitchburg State Falcons in a Little East Conference field hockey game Saturday afternoon at Elliot Field.

With the win, Southern Maine clinches a 2013 playoff berth, finishing the regular season with an overall record of 10-10 and a 6-5 mark in the Little East.  The Huskies have won their last five games consecutively and will await their seeding and opponent for the upcoming LEC tourney.  Fitchburg State concludes its season with an overall record of 6-11 and 1-10 in the conference.

Despite holding a 14-4 advantage in shots, Southern Maine found itself in a 1-1 draw with the Falcons after the first half.  USM senior Natalie Harkins (Windham, Maine) gave the Huskies a 1-0 lead at the 15:11 mark Peyton Dostie connecting for her 12th goal of the season with the first of three assists in the game from junior (Standish, Maine/Bonny Eagle).  The Falcons responded near the end of the first half when Amber Nunes (West Wareham, Mass.) collected a rebound off of a shot from Rebecca Bush (Littleton, Mass.) at 32:49.

Stephanie Stearns (Mystic, Conn.) notched her team-leading eight goal of the season to give the Falcons a 2-1 advantage in the 44th minute, but Husky senior Rebecca Pratt (Cornville, Maine/Skowhegan) snagged the equalizer in the six minutes later.  The Falcons retook a one goal lead on a goal from Erin Morrissey (Hubbardston, Mass.) at 58:25, but back-to-back scores from Ariel Kaplan (South Berwick, Maine/Marshwood) and Pratt put USM ahead 4-3 with less than four minutes in regulation. Both goals were assisted by Dostie. The Falcons were able to force the overtime action when Bush converted a penalty stroke at 68:10.

In overtime, Fitchburg State had the first scoring opportunity, but USM countered setting up Boghosian's game-winner from the top of the circle at 70:51.  The goal was Boghasian's fourth of the season.

Southern Maine held a 33-13 advantage in shots and an 18-2 advantage in corners over the Falcons. In net, Fitchburg, sophomore Judith Valentin (Brockton, Mass.) was strong over her 85 minutes of work, posting 17 saves, while freshman Amanda Kasbohm (York, Maine) made five saves.
