Barr, Niles and Hall Score to Lead Southern Maine Past Wheaton 3-1

GORHAM, Maine   –  Senior Dylan Barr (Phippsburg, Maine/Morse) scored the first goal of the game and the first goal of her 2026 season to help the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 3-1 win over the Wheaton College (Mass.) Lyons in a non-conference field hockey game Saturday afternoon at Hannaford Field.
 
Sophomores Maddie Niles (Benton, Maine/Lawrence) and Mackenzie Hall (Westbrook, Maine) each scored in the third quarter to help Southern Maine seal the win and improve to 2-0 at home on Hannaford Field.

Today's game marked the 10th game in the series between the University of Southern Maine and Wheaton College (Mass.). Southern Maine leads the overall series 7-3 after today's contest and has won the last two consecutively defeating the Lyons 2-1 in 2025. 
 
THE GOALKEEPERS:
Wheaton: Grace Ferguson (1-1), 60:00, 3 GA, 11 Saves
SM:  Haylee Romasco (2-0), 60:00, 1 GA, 7 Saves
 
Defensive Saves: None
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • In evenly played first quarter, Barr gave USM a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute scoring an unassisted goal.  Barr collected the rebound off of an initial save by Wheaton's Grace Ferguson who had turned away an attempt from senior Leah Thibodeau (Auburn, Maine/Edward Little).
  • Finished the second quarter with a 3-0 lead in shots and a 3-1 margin in penalty corners, the game remained 1-0 in favor of the Huskies as Ferguson made a pair of stops.
  • Niles struck just five minutes into the third quarter for her second goal of the season, and Hall followed just five minutes later to put USM ahead by a commanding 3-0 margin. 
  • Wheaton's Hannah Fortin made it 3-1, breaking up the shutout bid in the 43rd minute before the Huskies' defense closed the door in the fourth, limiting the Lyons to just two shots. 
 
INSIDE THE STATS:
  • Southern Maine had a 17-10 advantage in shots (14-8 on goal).  Both the Lyons and Huskies had 11 penalty corners each.  Wheaton had seven of their penalty corners in the third quarter.
  • Six different Huskies have scored so far this season. Niles' two goals and two assists have her tied for first in points on the team with six.
  • The Huskies have outshot their opponents 90-24 over four games. 
 
UP NEXT:
Southern Maine hits the road again and will visit Wellesley College on Tuesday, September 15 (4:00 pm), before hosting Husson and University of Lynchburg on September 18 (4:00 pm) and September 20 (12:00 pm) at Hannaford Field.
