GORHAM, Maine – The Salem State University Vikings won two out of three doubles matches and four out of six singles matches to earn a 6-3 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference women's tennis match Saturday afternoon in Gorham, Maine.
With the win, Salem State improves to 2-1 overall and 2-0 in the Little East Conference. Southern Maine sees its three-match win streak come to an end with the loss and dips to 6-3 overall and 2-2 in the LEC.
Seniors Jessica Spinale (Saugus, Mass.) and Anna Yaskell (Stockholm, Sweden) earned an 8-4 win over the USM tandem of freshman Courtney Aldrich (Lewiston, Maine) and sophomore Molly Morrill (Litchfield, Maine/Oak Hill) at second doubles to lead the Vikings.
Spinale and Yaskell also defeated Aldrich and Morrill at third and fourth singles, respectively. Spinale took down Aldrich 6-4, 6-0, while Yaskell defeated Morrill 6-2, 6-3.
USM juniors Mary Moran (Windham, Maine/Portland) and Emily Boutin (Old Town) were double winners for USM. Moran and Boutin were victorious at first doubles defeating senior Michelle McEwen (Billerica, Mass.) and junior Maddy Ward (Somerville, Mass.) 8-4. Moran also earned a 6-4, 6-4 win over McEwen at first singles, while Boutin took a 6-0, 6-2 win at second singles over Ward.
Southern Maine travels to UMass Dartmouth on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) for a Little East Conference match. Salem State travel to Curry College on Monday (3:30 p.m.) for a non-conference match.
