Box Score GORHAM, Maine -- The second-ranked Norwich University Cadets scored six unanswered goals to erase a two-goal deficit en route to a 7-3 victory over the upset-minded University of Southern Maine Huskies in an ECAC Women's East game Friday at the USM Ice Arena.
The win was the third straight for the Cadets who improved to 17-2-1 overall and 14-0-1 in league play (first place). The Cadets have won the last ten meetings between the two sides. The Huskies, who are still in the hunt for a home ice berth in the upcoming playoffs, dropped their second straight to slide to 5-11-4 overall and 5-6-2 in ECAC play.
The Huskies grabbed a 2-0 lead with a pair of power-play goals in the first period despite being out shot 13-4. Senior Christen Hart (Saugus, Mass.) stuffed home the rebound of a shot by classmate Kylie Blasen (Okemos, Mich.) at 2:28, and Blasen redirected a shot by junior Alex Smith (Winthrop, Mass.) at 11:46. Freshman goalie Liz Bergstrom (Chanhassen, Minn.) protected the lead stopping every Norwich shot.
Rookie Tyne Gove (Berwick, Ontario) got the Cadets on the board early in the second period tipping home a shot from junior Jillayne DeBus (Howell, Mich.) at 1:01. The Huskies restored their two-goal advantage at 6:14 when senior Katie Paradis (Rochester, N.H.) flipped a backhander past Norwich sophomore netminder Kelly Fisk (Hannibal, N.Y.).
Norwich began its comeback when sophomore Marie-Philip Guay (Longueuil, Quebec) tallied a power-play goal at 7:26. Norwich kept up its relentless pressure throughout the period and finally equalized at 19:15 on the first of two goals by freshman Kaycie Anderson (Maple Plain, Minn.).
The Cadets ended any thoughts of a Huskies upset scoring three goals in a span of 1:41 in the third period. Gove potted her second marker of the game, and the eventual game winner, at 5:08. Anderson collected her second goal at 6:09, and junior Stephanie Invernizzi (Hingham, Mass.) finished off the outburst at 6:49. Sophomore Kayla Parsons (Fairbanks, Alaska) closed the scoring with a power-play goal at 16:33.
Guay also earned a pair of assists to finish with three points. Parsons had a goal and an assist. DeBus, senior Amanda Wilks (Winnipeg, Manitoba) and sophomore Renee Lortie (Cornwall, Ontario) each had two assists. Fisk finished the game with four saves.
Blasen and Paradis led the Huskies with a goal and an assist apiece. Junior Kailey Bubier (Auburn, Maine) picked up two assists. Bergstorm stopped 36 shots.
Southern Maine returns to action Saturday (1:00 p.m.) playing its regular season finale against Saint Michael's College. USM will honor its seven seniors prior to the start of the game. Norwich travels to Plymouth State University on Saturday (2:30 p.m.).
