Lane (2 Goals) Helps USM Forge 4-4 Tie at New England College

            HENNIKER, N.H. – Sophomore Maggie Lane (Burlington, Mass.) scored a pair of goals, including the game-tying goal with 6:13 to play, to help the University of Southern Maine Huskies forge a 4-4 overtime tie against the New England College Pilgrims in ECAC Women's East action Friday afternoon at Lee Clement Arena.

            The tie leaves the Huskies with a 1-1-1 overall record, and the same mark in league play.  The Pilgrims are 2-1-2 overall and 1-1-1 in ECAC play.  The two sides will meet again at USM on February 9.

            Lane scored her second goal of the game in the third period while the Huskies were on the power play.  Lane redirected a shot from senior Katie Davis (Woburn, Mass.) past NEC sophomore goaltender Lauren Hopps (Green Bay, Wis.) for the equalizer.  Junior Erin Banfield (Montpelier, Vt.) also picked up an assist on the play.

            USM sophomore goalie Liz Bergstrom (Chanhassen, Minn.) preserved the tie making 35 saves in the game, including three in the overtime period.

            NEC grabbed an early 1-0 lead on a power-play marker by rookie Morgan Braniff (Tustin, Calif.) at 3:25 of the first period.  Lane drew USM even with her first goal of the season at 16:59 converting a pass from junior Shannon Cronin (Wakefield, Mass.).

            The Huskies took their only lead in the game at the 4:51 mark of the second period when rookie Sarah Timmons (Fall River, N.S.) netted her second goal of the season.

            Freshman Rachel Vigliano (Monroe, N.J.) scored back-to-back goals in a span of 1:53 to give the Pilgrims a 3-2 lead.  Davis would score with 32 seconds remaining in the period, assisted by sophomore Julia Pearl (Essex Jct., Vt.) and rookie Kaleigh Heath (Jericho, Vt.), to send the teams to the locker rooms tied at 3-3 after 40 minutes.

            Senior Kate Kellar (Pittsfield, Mass.) gave the Pilgrims a 4-3 lead at 7:30 of the third period tallying her third goal of the season off assists from Vigliano and sophomore Madyson Moore (Dubuque, Iowa).

            NEC would outshoot USM 39-18 for the game.  Hopps would record 14 saves in the Pilgrims cage.  Each side would tally a pair of power-play goals.

            Pearl had a pair of assists for the Huskies.  Moore had two helpers for the Pilgrims.

            Southern Maine travels to Rutland, Vt., on Saturday (2:00 p.m.) to play Castleton State College.  New England College will host Plymouth State University on Saturday (1:00 p.m.).
