Box Score GORHAM, Maine – Sophomore forward Peyton Dostie (Standish, Maine/Bonny Eagle) scored a pair of goals to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 4-3 win over the Fitchburg State College Falcons in a Little East Conference field hockey game Saturday afternoon at Hannaford Field in Gorham, Maine.
The win is the second for the Huskies who improve 7-11 overall and 4-6 in the Little East Conference. Fitchburg State falls to 5-10 overall and 2-8 in the LEC with its seventh consecutive loss.
Dostie and sophomore forward Annabelle Frenette (Old Orchard Beach, Maine) each scored goals in the first half to carry Southern Maine to a 2-0 halftime lead. Dostie redirected a rocket of an assist from junior midfielder Cristina Mountain (Dexter, Maine) for the Huskies first goal just 4:24 into the half. Frenette doubled the Huskies' advantage in the 14th minute with her first goal of the season on an assist from junior midfielder Rebecca Pratt (Cornville, Maine/Skowhegan).
The Huskies continued to attack in the second half and lead 4-0 following Dostie's second goal of the game and team-leading 14th of the season in the 39th minute and goal from junior Stephanie Lomasney (York, Maine) in the 44th minute. Dostie's 14 goals are tied for seventh in USM single season records.
Despite trailing the Huskies' 4-0 with just over 20 minutes left to play, the Falcons rallied to pull within a goal thanks to the herculean efforts of senior forward Jamie Kelley (Pepperell, Mass./North Essex). Kelley finished the game with three goals for the hat trick and increased her total for the season to 15.
Kelley scored her first goal of the game in the 49th minute with a speedy breakaway for a 4-1 USM advantage. Kelley then score a pair of goals in quick succession notching her second goal of the game in the 68th minute on a tight angle. Not finished, Kelley scored her third goal of the game just 30 seconds later after stripping the ball from a USM defender and speeding to goal for a 4-3 Falcon deficit with 1:30 to play.
With the game suddenly tightened to a one-goal lead, USM took a time out, regrouped and were able to fend off Kelley and the Falcons for the final 1:30 of action.
Falcon sophomore goalkeeper Lucy Holewa (Londonderry, N.H.) made 12 saves in the loss. USM junior Kayla Kennedy (Windham, Maine) made zero saves in the win. Kennedy played the first half, while sophomore Lindsey Fortin (Berwick, Maine/Noble) and freshman Casey White (Brewer, Maine) played the final 35. Fortin made zero saves and allowed two goals in 13:23 of action, while White made three saves and allowed a goal in 21:37.
Fitchburg State sophomore Bryana McGrath (Lunenburg, Mass.) and USM freshman Hillary Mower (Ripley, Maine/Dexter) each made a defensive save.
