MIDDLETOWN, R.I. -- The Salve Regina University women's ice hockey team scored a pair of unassisted power-play goals in the third period to overcome a one-goal deficit and defeat the University of Southern Maine, 3-2, in an ECAC (Eastern College Athletic Conference) Women's East game played Saturday afternoon.
The win was the third straight for the Seahawks who finished the regular season 10-12-3 overall and 9-7-2 in league play. The Seahawks jumped over the University of Massachusetts Boston in the standings to secure the final home spot in the upcoming playoffs, and will host the Beacons in a first round playoff game next weekend.
Southern Maine, now 7-15-2 overall and 5-11-1 in the league, concludes the regular season on Sunday (2:00 p.m.) with a game at Holy Cross. The loss was USM's sixth of the season by one goal. USM is locked into the sixth spot in the standings and will play at third-seeded New England College in the first round of the playoffs.
Freshman Erin Banfield (Montpelier, Vt.) gave the Huskies a 1-0 lead with her ninth goal of the season at 8:19 of the first period.
Salve Regina tied the score at 8:57 of the second period when senior Kendra Andrie (Muskegon, Mich.) lit the lamp for the ninth time. Junior Christen Hart (Saugus, Mass.) restored the Huskies lead less than four minutes later with her third goal.
The Seahawks tallied their first power-play goal of the final period at 8:37 when rookie Erin McCullough (Ludlow, Mass.) found the back of the net. Sophomore Melanie Sherlock (Colorado Springs, Colo.) provided the game winner at 14:22.
USM freshman goalie Jordan Lee (Colorado Springs, Colo.) finished the game with 24 saves. Sophomore Ali Muehlbronner (Glenside, Penn.) stopped 22 of 24 shots for Salve Regina.
