GORHAM, Maine – The University of Southern Maine Huskies women's tennis team swept all three doubles points and earned two key victories in singles action to earn a 5-4 win over the UMass Dartmouth Corsairs in a Little East Conference women's tennis match Saturday afternoon in Gorham, Maine.
With its second straight win, Southern Maine improves its record to 4-3 overall and 2-2 in the Little East. The conference loss is the first of the season for the Corsairs who fall to 4-2 overall and 3-1 in the LEC.
Junior Tegan Talbot (Topsham, Maine/Mt. Ararat) and sophomore Emily Boutin (Old Town, Maine) were the lone double-winners for the Huskies. Talbot and Boutin each earned pivotal wins in singles action for USM as the Corsairs tried to rally winning four out of the six singles match.
Talbot defeated sophomore Angela Pollard (Portsmouth, R.I.) 6-3, 6-2 at third singles, while Boutin cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 win over Corsair senior Courtney Morey (Mashpee, Mass.) at second singles.
The Huskies led the Corsairs 3-0 after the doubles matches had been played setting the stage for the Corsairs comeback bid. Talbot and sophomore Mary Moran (Windham, Maine/Portland) earned an 8-4 win at first doubles to lead the way defeating the Corsair tandem of Morey and sophomore Nicole Pelletier (Swansea, Mass.).
Boutin and junior Ali Hartley (Boothbay Harbor, Maine/Boothbay) downed Pollard and sophomore Allison Furtado (Fairhaven, Mass.) handily 8-1 at second doubles. In third doubles, freshman Molly Morrill (Litchfield, Maine/Oak Hill) and sophomore Leah Churchill (Cumberland Foreside, Maine/Greely) earned an 8-6 victory.
Southern Maine is in action on Sunday (1:00 p.m.) at UMass Boston for a Little East Conference match. The Corsairs host Bridgewater State on Tuesday (3:30 p.m.) for a conference match.
