GORHAM, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine Huskies women's tennis team swept all three doubles points and took five of six singles matches to earn an 8-1 victory over the Rhode Island College Anchorwomen in Little East Conference action Saturday afternoon.
With the win, Southern Maine ends a three-match slide and improves to 3-4 overall and 1-4 in the conference. Rhode Island College remains winless at 0-8 and 0-4 in the conference.
Junior Katelyn Ouellette (Lewiston, Maine) and sophomore Tegan Talbot (Topsham, Maine/Mt. Ararat) started the Huskies' romp from the top of the doubles order with an 8-3 win over Rhode Island College junior Gabriela Batek (Greenville, R.I./Smithfield) and sophomore Doris Belanger (West Warwick, R.I.).
The Huskies' freshmen tandem of Rachel Miller (Portland, Maine/Deering) and Emily Boutin (Old Town, Maine) earned an 8-2 win at second doubles, and senior captain Erica Robertson (St. Albans, Vt./Bellows Free Academy) and freshman Sarah Moody (Scarborough, Maine) took an 8-1 win at third doubles.
In singles action, Miller downed Batek 7-6 (3), 6-0 at first singles, while Boutin took a convincing, straight-set win at fifth singles over junior Suzi Healy-Wurzburg.
Freshman Kassandra Lima (Coventry, R.I.) earned the Anchorwomen's lone point with a 6-1, 6-4 win at sixth singles.
Southern Maine travels to Thomas College on Thursday (4:00 p.m.). Rhode Island College is at Endicott College on Tuesday (3:00 p.m.).
