GORHAM, Maine -- Sophomore Tegan Talbot (Topsham, Maine/Mt. Ararat) ignited a three-point rally to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies women's tennis team to a 5-4, come-from-behind victory over the Western Connecticut State University Colonials Saturday afternoon in a Little East Conference tennis match.
The win was the fourth straight for the Huskies who improved to 6-4 overall and 3-4 in the Little East Conference. The win also marked the first win for Southern Maine over Western Connecticut, the defending LEC champions, since the 2004 season. Western Connecticut dropped its third straight match to fall to 5-4 overall and 3-3 in the conference.
Down a set to Colonial sophomore Ashley Gorelik (Brookfield, Conn.), Talbot rallied for a critical 4-6, 6-1, 6-0 win at fourth singles. Freshman Emily Boutin (Old Town, Maine) secured the game-tying point with a strong 6-1, 6-1 win over senior Deborah Ferreira (Danbury, Conn.) at fifth singles, before senior captain Erica Robertson (St. Albans, Vt./Bellows Free Academy) delivered the win with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at sixth singles against Colonial junior Maxx Zimmer (Sandy Hook, Conn./Newtown).
Western Connecticut, trailing 2-1 after the doubles matches, won the first three singles points to lead the Huskies 4-2. Senior Lauren Post (Danbury, Conn.) defeated USM freshman Rachel Miller (Portland, Maine/Deering) 6-4, 6-1 at the top of the singles lineup.
Southern Maine hosts Colby-Sawyer College on Sunday (12:00 p.m.). Western Connecticut travels to Worcester State University on Tuesday (3:30 p.m.).
