Box Score GORHAM, Maine – Sophomore forward Kailey Bubier (Auburn, Maine/Hebron Academy) redirected a pass from junior forward Whitney McDaniel (Livermore, Maine/Livermore Falls) to knocking in the game-winning goal minutes into the overtime period to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 1-0 win over the Fitchburg State College Falcons Saturday afternoon at Paula D. Hodgdon Field in Gorham, Maine.
With the win, Southern Maine improves to 8-12 overall and 5-6 in the Little East Conference. Fitchburg State falls to 10-7 and 6-5 in the conference.
Both teams battled to a scoreless draw at the end of regulation. Fitchburg State and Southern Maine each had solid chances in regulation but both teams goalkeepers played well. Fitchburg State freshman Rachel Mays (Somerset, Mass.) made five saves in the loss. USM senior Rachel Lolley (Gorham, Maine) made all three USM save while playing the first half. Freshman Kayla Kennedy (Windham, Maine) played the final 39:54 for the Huskies and did not face a shot.
In the overtime period, USM dominated the action, forcing three penalty corners and holding the ball in their offensive third. Bubier was able to score the deciding goal after McDaniel carried the ball down the right side of the field and sent in a driven pass in front of the goal.
Southern Maine will play in the Little East Conference tournament at an opponent and time to be determined on Tuesday, November 2. Fitchburg State will also continue in the LEC tournament on Tuesday.
