Bezanson Walk-Off Double Seals Extra-Inning Win for Huskies in LEC Split with Rhode Island College

GORHAM, Maine –  Senior Ella Bezanson (Amesbury, Mass.) hit a walk-off double to the fence in the gap in right field to deliver a 2-1 eight-inning win for the University of Southern Maine Huskies over the Rhode Island College Anchormen in the second game of the Little East Conference softball doubleheader Tuesday night at the USM Softball Stadium. Southern Maine dropped the opener 6-4.

The Huskies collected 10 hits in the game two win, including three doubles: two from senior Mackenzie Renner (Alton, NH/Prospect Mountain) and Bezanson's game-winner.  Sophomore Mia Coots (Hartland, Maine/Nokomis) went the distance in game two, pitching eight innings and holding RIC to one run on eight hits and one walk.

Renner finished the doubleheader 3-for-7 at the plate with three RBI and three runs scored. She had a home run and a pair of doubles.  Bezanson was also 3-for-7 with two doubles and two RBI. Sophomore Aislin Davis (Tewksbury, Mass.) also had three hits (3-for-5) and drew a pair of walks.  Davis has hit safely in 12 of the Huskies' last 13 games.

How It Happened: Game One
  • After a scoreless three innings, Rhode Island College pulled away in the fourth putting together a five-run frame fueled by extra-base hits. Melanie Early, Sydney Duclos, and Noelle Simmons each recorded doubles in the inning, allowing Rhode Island to take control of the game.
  • Southern Maine responded immediately in the bottom of the fourth, showing resilience as Ella Bezanson sparked the offense with a double to get a run back.
  • Rhode Island continued to apply pressure in the fifth inning, adding another run to extend its lead to 6–1.
  • The Huskies began to chip away at the deficit in the bottom of the fifth when Mackenzie Renner (Alton, NH/Prospect Mountain) launched a two-RBI home run, bringing energy back into the lineup and cutting into the lead.
  • Southern Maine continued to battle late, with Renner driving in another run in the seventh inning to make it a two-run game.
  • Despite the late push and improved offensive production, the Huskies were unable to complete the comeback as Rhode Island held on for the 6–4 victory.

Game Two
  • Game two featured a much tighter, defense-driven contest, with both teams struggling to find offensive momentum early. Strong pitching and clean defensive play on both sides kept the score low throughout the game.
  • Southern Maine got on the board with an RBI from sophomore Taylor Takatsu (West Gardiner, Maine / Gardiner Area), while Rhode Island answered with a run of its own off the bat of Melanie Early, evening the score at 1–1.
  • As the game moved into the later innings, both teams had opportunities but were unable to capitalize, forcing the game into extra innings tied at one.
  • In the top of the eighth inning, Southern Maine's defense stepped up in a key moment, with sophomore Mia Coots (Hartland, Maine / Nokomis Regional) delivering a strong performance in the circle and recording four strikeouts on the day to keep Rhode Island off the board.
  • Heading into the bottom of the eighth, the Huskies looked to capitalize on their opportunity, and it was Ella Bezanson who delivered.
  • After a lead-off double from Renner to the fence in left field to set the table, Bezanson came through with her second hit of the game, driving in the winning run and sealing a 2–1 walk-off victory for Southern Maine to earn the split.
