Southern Maine Crushes Rhode Island College 22-1 on Senior Day

GORHAM, Maine – Graduate student Katelyn D'Appolonia (Yarmouth, Maine) scored six goals, dished out four assists, and had eight draw controls on Saturday afternoon ad University of Southern Maine Huskies' women's lacrosse team defeated the Rhode Island College Anchorwomen 22-1 on Senior Day. Senior Cierra Hill (Pembroke, N.H./Pembroke Academy) scored five times, graduate student Anna Byers (Milford, Ct./Joseph A. Foran) and senior Elaina Hanselmann (Sanford, Maine) each scored twice, and seniors Ella Burnell (Biddeford, Maine) and Britney Hill (Pembroke, N.H./Pembroke Academy) also had goals.
 
Freshmen Mariam DeLisle (Whitefield, Maine/Lincoln Academy), Sam Poulin (Gray, Maine/Gray-New Gloucester), Eve Ariskin (Manchester, Maine/Maranacook) and McKenna Nanartowich (Springvale, Maine/Sanford), and junior Eliza Pattershall (Readfield, Maine/Maranacook) also scored for the Huskies.
 
Junior goalie Maggie Jones (St. John's, Newfoundland/Mount Academy) had a first-half shutout and made one save before sophomore Cally Dow (Lewiston, Maine) took over in goal for the second half.
 
The Huskies honored Byers, Burnell, D'Appolonia, both Hill sisters, Hanselman and senior Makayla Gorman (South Windsor, Conn./ Tolland) during the pregame Senior Day ceremony.

The Huskies lead the all-time series 24-1 and have won the last 23 meetings.
 
The Goaltenders:
Rhode Island College: Giana Franco (1-5), 30:00, 16 goals allowed, three saves
Rhode Island College: Abaigeal Estano, 30:00, six goals allowed, two saves
Southern Maine: Maggie Jones (6-1), 30:00, zero goals allowed, one save
Southern Maine: Cally Dow, 30:00, one goal allowed, zero saves.
 
How It Happened:
  • Southern Maine jumped out to a 10-0 lead after the first quarter thanks to four goals by D'Appolonia, two by C. Hill, two by Byers and one each from DeLisle and Pattershall. DeLisle, Byers and Hanselmann also had assists in the quarter.
  • The Huskies scored six more times in the second quarter to take a 16-0 lead into halftime. Two of those goals came from C. Hill and Hanselmann, Nanartowich, Poulin and D'Appolonia also scored. D'Appolonia also has assists on one of Hill's goals and Poulin's score.
  • Southern Maine's shutout continued into the third quarter as the Huskies outscored the Anchorwomen 3-0 in the third. B. Hill scored her first goal of the season, and the Huskies had goals from Burnell and Hanselmann as well.
  • Brie Macaruso ended the combined shutout bid 53 seconds into the fourth quarter after her shot trickled in to make the score 19-1. The Huskies added three more goals from C. Hill, Ariskin and D'Appolonia for the 22-1 final. Ariskin also assisted on D'Appolonia's goal, while Burnell had the assist on Ariskin's score and D'Appolonia on Hill's.
 
Inside The Stats:
  • Southern Maine put 27 shots on goal and allowed just two by the Anchorwomen.
  • The Huskies led 19-4 in draw controls led by eight from D'Appolonia. Byers and C. Hill tied for second with five each.
  • Byers led the Huskies in ground balls with three.  
  • DeLisle and sophomore Calista Kinney (Topsham, Maine/Mt. Ararat) each caused three turnovers.
 
Up Next:
The Huskies will face UMass Boston on Wednesday at 4:00 pm in their final home game of the regular season.
