Southern Maine’s Winning Streak Ends with 12-5 Loss to WestConn

DANBURY, Conn. – The Western Connecticut State University Wolves defeated the University of Southern Maine Huskies 12-5 on Saturday afternoon behind four goals and two assists from Isabella Pota. Madison Ratchford also had five points on a goal and four assists. The Huskies were led by Mariam DeLisle (Whitefield, Maine/Lincoln Academy) with two goals and an assist.
 
Graduate student Katelyn D'Appolonia (Yarmouth, Maine) and senior Cierra Hill (Pembroke, N.H./Pembroke Academy) each had a goal and an assist for the Huskies. Graduate student Anna Byers (Milford, Ct./Joseph A. Foran) also scored while junior Eliza Pattershall (Readfield, Maine/Maranacook) recorded an assist. D'Appolonia led all players in draw controls with seven. She also tied with Cierra Hill and Britney Hill (Pembroke, N.H./Pembroke Academy) for the most ground balls on the team with three.
 
Norah Zuidema made four saves for the Wolves in the win. Junior goalie Maggie Jones (St. John's, Newfoundland/Mount Academy) saw her four-game winning streak come to an end despite making a season-high 11 saves.

How It Happened:
  • The Wolves came out strong with three goals in the first three minutes. Pota scored the first just 46 seconds into the game with Ratchford assisting. Morgan Brace then scored a free position goal before Pota set up Victoria Gracy for a goal 2:26 into the quarter. Gina Giambald extended the WestConn lead to 4-0 before back-to-back goals by DeLisle and Byers cut the lead to 4-2 with 1:43 left in the quarter. Charlize Wolf made the lead 5-2 with an up goal with nine seconds left in the quarter,
  • WestConn outscored the Huskies 2-1 in the second quarter with Kyla Murnane and Mia Negus scoring for the Wolves. DeLisle scored Southern Maine's goal with D'Appolonia assisting.
  • Pota scored an up-goal, an even-strength goal and a down-goal in the third period to make the WestConn lead 10-3.
  • Each team scored twice in the fourth quarter for the 12-5 final. D'Appolonia and Hill scored for the Huskies, and the WestConn goals came from Grace King and Ratchford.

  • WestConn led 23-9 in shots on goal and 31-17 in ground balls.

Up Next:
The Huskies will play again on Tuesday when they host Husson University at 4:00 pm. The game was originally scheduled for March 3 before being postponed due to weather and field conditions.
