Big Third Quarter Gives Huskies 11-4 Win Over Bridgewater State

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The University of Southern Maine Huskies' women's lacrosse team scored eight times in the third quarter on their way to an 11-4 road win against the Bridgewater State University Bears on Friday. Graduate student Katelyn D'Appolonia (Yarmouth, Maine) and senior Cierra Hill (Pembroke, N.H./Pembroke Academy) each had four points in the quarter with two goals and two assists. D'Appolonia finished the game with three goals and three assists to go along with six ground balls and five draw controls. Hill also had a terrific game with two goals, three assists, three caused turnovers and four ground balls.
 
Graduate student Anna Byers (Milford, Ct./Joseph A. Foran) and senior Elaina Hanselmann (Sanford, Maine) each scored twice, while freshman Mariam DeLisle (Whitefield, Maine/Lincoln Academy) and junior Eliza Pattershall (Readfield, Maine/Maranacook) each recorded a goal and an assist.
 
Freshman goalie Emma Morrison (Rockland, Maine/Kents Hill) earned the win to move to 3-0 on the season. The team's three wins to start the season are their most since the 2013 team started the season with four consecutive wins.

How It Happened:
  • Bridgewater State scored the only two goals of the first quarter with Erin Henn and Sophia Fleurent accounting for the goals.
  • The Huskies finally got on the board with 7:47 left in the second quarter a goal by D'Appolonia from Hill before the Bears extended their lead to 3-1 on another goal by Fleurent. Hanselmann added an up goal with 4:11 left in the half to get the Huskies within a goal at 3-2.
  • Following a Lizzy Deacon goal in the first minute, the Huskies went on an 8-0 run that featured two goals each by D'Appolonia, Hill and Byers plus goals by Pattershall and DeLisle, who also had assists during the run.
  • Hanselmann netted the only goal of the fourth quarter with freshman Sam Poulin (Gray, Maine/ Gray-New Gloucester) recorded the assist for the first point of her career.
 
Inside The Stats:
  • The Huskies led 25-5 in shots on goal and 35-9 in total shots.
  • Thanks to five by D'Appolonia, the Huskies had an 11-6 lead in draw controls. Senior Britney Hill (Pembroke, N.H./Pembroke Academy) and Byers tied for second on the team with two apiece.
  • Southern Maine went 15-for-16 on clears while the Bears finished 10-for-18.
  • Three of Bridgewater State's goals came on free position shots. The Huskies went 1-for-5 on free position shots.
  • Junior Alivia Johnston (Oakland, Maine/ Messalonskee) caused two turnovers to tie with D'Appolonia for second on the team.

The next game for the Huskies will be a home game on Tuesday, March 10 at 6:30 pm against Colby College.
