Southern Maine Pulls Away from Eastern Connecticut State 14-5

MANSFIELD, Conn. – Junior Eliza Pattershall (Readfield, Maine/Maranacook) scored five goals, four of which came in the second quarter, to help lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies' women's lacrosse team to a 14-5 win over Eastern Connecticut State University Warriors on Saturday in Little East Conference play. Senior Cierra Hill (Pembroke, N.H./Pembroke Academy) also recorded five points with two goals and three assists.
 
Graduate student Katelyn D'Appolonia (Yarmouth, Maine) scored twice in addition to recording two assists, three caused turnovers and eight draw controls. Freshman Mariam DeLisle (Whitefield, Maine/Lincoln Academy) and junior Elaina Hanselmann (Sanford, Maine) each scored twice. Graduate student Anna Byers (Milford, Ct./Joseph A. Foran) had two points on a goal and an assist
 
Junior goalie Maggie Jones (St. John's, Newfoundland/Mount Academy) earned her first win as a Husky with nine saves in her first start of the season.

Series History:
The Warriors lead the all-time series 19-13. Southern Maine won last year's game by a score of 15-13 in Gorham.
 
The Goaltenders:
Southern Maine: Maggie Jones (1-0), 60:00, five goals allowed, nine saves
Eastern Connecticut: Maizie Rukat (1-4), 60:00, 14 goals allowed, eight saves
 
How It Happened:
  • A free position goal by Emma Oliano and an up goal by Molly Page put the Warriors ahead 2-0 before the Huskies tied the game on goals by Hill and DeLisle. The Warriors regained the lead with a free position goal by Jocelyn Kennedy with just under two minutes left in the quarter.
  • Pattershall scored four times in the second quarter to give the Huskies a 6-4 lead entering halftime. Two of her goals came on free position shots. The Warriors had a goal from Hannah Seltzer in the quarter.
  • The Huskies pulled away with five unanswered goals by five different players in the third quarter to go up 11-4.  Hanselmann, D'Appolonia, DeLisle, Pattershall and Byers each scored.
  • Hill had a goal and two assists and D'Appolonia recorded a goal and an assist as the Huskies outscored the Warriors 3-1 in the final quarter.
 
Inside The Stats:
  • Southern Maine led 22-14 in shots on goal, 14-7 in draw controls and 22-13 in ground balls.
  • The Huskies went 3-for-3 on free position shots.
  • D'Appolonia and Pattershall each caused three turnovers.
  • Pattershall, DeLisle, Jones and sophomore Calista Kinney (Topsham, Maine/Mt. Ararat) each had three ground balls to tie for the most on the team.
 
Up Next:
The Huskies will travel to face Framingham State University on Wednesday at 7:00 pm in their final non-conference game of the season.
