Huskies Slip Past Rams 12-9

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. – Freshman Mariam DeLisle (Whitefield, Maine/Lincoln Academy) recorded a career-high four points on three goals and an assist for the University of Southern Maine Huskies' women's lacrosse team on Wednesday night as part of a 12-9 road win over the Framingham State University Rams. The Rams, who were trailing 7-1 after the first quarter, tied the game at 9-9 with 5:33 left before the Huskies ended the game on a 3-0 run that featured a down goal by DeLisle. She also assisted on a fourth quarter goal by graduate student Anna Byers (Milford, Ct./Joseph A. Foran) to give the Huskies breathing room late in the game. The goal by Byers completed her hat trick.
 
Graduate student Katelyn D'Appolonia (Yarmouth, Maine) scored twice and assisted on two goals. Junior Eliza Pattershall (Readfield, Maine/Maranacook) and senior Cierra Hill (Pembroke, N.H./Pembroke Academy) each recorded three points. Hill recorded a goal and two assists and Pattershall scored a pair of goals and had an assist.
 
Junior goalie Maggie Jones (St. John's, Newfoundland/Mount Academy) finished with four saves to earn the win for the Huskies.
 
Emma Kendzulak led the Rams with four goals and an assist.

Tonight's game was the first time the two programs have faced off.
 
The Goaltenders:
Southern Maine: Maggie Jones (2-0), 60:00, nine goals allowed, four saves
Framingham State: Isabella DiMare (3-7), 60:00, 12 goals allowed, five saves
 
How It Happened:
  • Pattershall scored 31 seconds in the opening quarter with D'Appolonia assisting. She then scored again with just over 10 minutes to go in the quarter with Hill assisting. D'Appolonia and Hill then each scored free position goals to make the lead 4-0 with seven minutes left in the quarter.  
  • The Rams got on the scoreboard with a Jenna James goal before the Huskies closed out the quarter with a 3-0 run that featured a goal by Byers and two from DeLisle to go ahead 7-1.
  • Framingham State scored the only two goals of the second quarter. First, Kendzulak scored 35 seconds into the new period. The Rams then had an up goal from Kelley DeBellis that was assisted by Kate McGovern to enter halftime down 7-3.
  • The hosts chipped away at the deficit by outscoring the Huskies 3-2 in the third quarter. D'Appolonia scored another free position goal and Byers added her second goal with senior Elaina Hanselmann (Sanford, Maine) assisting. Kendzulak scored two of the goals for the Rams with the other one coming from Lily Malloy.
  • Two goals by James and McGovern in the span of 45 seconds cut the USM lead to 9-8. Madeline Bosma assisted on both goals. The Rams tied the game with a free position goal by Kendzulak with 5:33 left.
  • DeLisle reclaimed the lead for the Huskies with a down goal with 4:02 left with D'Appolonia being credited with the assist. DeLisle then set up Byers for a goal with 2:47 to go to push the lead to 11-9. Following a yellow card on the Rams, junior Ella Burnell (Biddeford, Maine) scored with two seconds to go for the 12-9 final.
 
Inside The Stats:
  • Southern Maine had a slight 17-14 lead in shots on goal and a 13-10 lead in draw controls.
  • Byers and D'Appolonia led the team with four draw controls each. D'Appolonia also led the team in caused turnovers with three.
  • DeLisle and Byers had four ground balls apiece.
  • The Huskies went 4-for-6 on free position shots and the Rams were a perfect 2-for-2.

The next game for the Huskies will be a road game against Keene State College on Saturday at 1:00 pm.
