D’Appolonia Leads Southern Past VTSU Castleton 15-6 in Little East Conference Opener

GORHAM, Maine – Graduate student Katelyn D'Appolonia (Yarmouth, Maine) scored four goals and assisted on three for the University of Southern Maine Huskies' women's lacrosse team in a 15-6 Little East Conference win over the Vermont State University Castleton Spartans on Saturday. D'Appolonia also led the Huskies with ground balls and four and had four draw controls.
 
The Huskies also had hat tricks from freshman Mariam DeLisle (Whitefield, Maine/Lincoln Academy) and senior Elaina Hanselmann (Sanford, Maine).
 
Senior Cierra Hill (Pembroke, N.H./Pembroke Academy) recorded three points with two goals and an assist, and graduate student Anna Byers (Milford, Ct./Joseph A. Foran) scored twice as well. Junior Eliza Pattershall (Readfield, Maine/Maranacook) scored a goal and added a pair of assists.
 
Freshman goalie Emma Morrison (Rockland, Maine/Kents Hill) allowed one goal in the first half to earn the win. Sophomore Cally Dow (Lewiston, Maine) played the second half and made one save.

The Huskies lead the all-time series 17-6 and have now won the last nine games in the series.

VTSU Castleton: Samantha White (1-3), 60:00, 15 goals allowed, seven saves
Southern Maine: Emma Morrison (5-2), 30:00, one goal allowed, one save
Southern Maine: Cally Dow, 30:00, five goals allowed, one save
 
How It Happened:
  • D'Appolonia and DeLisle each scored twice in the first quarter. D'Appolonia opened the scoring with a goal 28 seconds into the contest then DeLisle scored an up goal with 9:14 left to extend the lead to 2-0. The former added her second goal with 1:32 left before the latter matched her with a second goal of her own just 30 seconds later. Hill assisted on DeLisle's second goal.
  • The Huskies scored times in the first three minutes of the second quarter with D'Appolonia, Hill, Hanselmann and DeLisle each finding the back of the net. Back-to-back goals by Byers and another D'Appolonia goal made the Huskies' lead 11-0 with 6:37 left in the half. Castleton finally got on the board with a goal by Phoebe Loomis from Renny Cota with 4:46 remaining in the second.
  • Southern Maine added two more goals in the third from D'Appolonia and Hill. The Spartans got their second goal of the game on a successful free position shot by Lanza Bellomo with less than two minutes left in the quarter.
  • Castleton outscored the Huskies 4-2 over the final quarter but could not overcome the deficit. Pattershall and Hanselmann recorded the Southern Maine goals with Pattershall's goal coming on a free position shot. She then assisted on Hanselmann's goal in the final minute of action.
 
Inside The Stats:
  • Southern Maine led 22-8 in shots on goal and 15-9 in draw controls. Hill's five draw controls led all players with D'Appolonia placing second with four.
  • Southern Maine had a 21-17 lead in ground balls by D'Appolonia's four. Pattershall, freshman McKenna Nanartowich (Springvale, Maine/Sanford) and senior Britney Hill (Pembroke, N.H./Pembroke Academy) each had three.
