GORHAM, Maine – University of Southern Maine senior guard
Thomas Whelan (Bronx, N.Y./Fordham Prep) added another post-season award to his resume with his selection to the 2025-2026 National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) All-District team.
A four-year player for the Huskies' squad, Whelan is the first Southern Maine player to earn NABC All-District honors for the program since Mike Fennessy '00 earned second team honors after the 1999-2000 season. Whelan, also a second team selection, becomes the fifth Husky player in program history to earn the honor joining Southern Maine greats Fennessy, Tim Bonsant '91, Jeff Bowers '89 and John Jordan (1977-1981).
Concluding his career as a three-time All-Little East Conference selection and a two-time Maine Men's Basketball Coaches & Writers Association (MMBCWA) All-State guard, Whelan finished his four years in Gorham with 96 career games played, totaling 1696 points, 462 rebounds, 249 assists, 131 steals and 34 blocked shots with a career shooting percentage of 50.32 (621-1234), and 103 career three-pointers. He is fourth in career points and seventh in scoring average (17.67). Whelan became the 29th student-athlete in program history to surpass 1000 career points, achieving the milestone as a junior, scoring 25 points on February 1, 2025 against Eastern Connecticut State.
During his final season, Whelan averaged a team-leading 21.3 points per game while shooting 45.9 percent (193-420) from the field, and 32.8 percent (45-137) from three-point range. The Huskies' guard added 5.0 rebounds, 3.2 assists, and 1.7 steals per game. Scoring in double-figures in 25-of-26 games played, Whelan had 14 games with at least 20 points, and three games with at least 30 points, including a season-high 34 points in an 85-82 win over UMaine Farmington (12/10/2025).
An Academic All-District selection, Whelan is completing his degree in Exercise Science. He is a three-time William B. Wise Scholar Athlete at the University, and has earned repeated Little East Conference Academic honors.
Southern Maine finished the 2025-26 season with a 16-10 overall record and an 11-5 mark in Little East Conference action – the most wins in conference play in program history. Earning the fourth seed in the Little East Conference tournament, Southern Maine qualified for the conference playoffs for the fifth consecutive season.
