GORHAM, Maine – Senior
Thomas Whelan (Bronx, N.Y./Fordham Prep) and freshman
Carter Galley (Owls Head, Maine/Oceanside)of the University of Southern Maine Huskies' men's basketball team each earned post-season honors from the Maine Men's Basketball Coaches & Writers Association (MMBCWA). Whelan was named First Team All-State, while Galley earned a spot on the 2026 MMBCWA All-Rookie Team.
Recently named first team All-Little East for the second consecutive season, Whelan is earned all-state honors for the second time in his career after being named second team all-state in 2025. In his final season in Gorham, Whelan averaged a team-leading 21.3 points per game while shooting 45.9 percent (193-420) from the field, and 32.8 percent (45-137) from three-point range. The Huskies' guard added 5.0 rebounds, 3.2 assists, and 1.7 steals per game. Scoring in double-figures in 25-of-26 games played, Whelan had 14 games with at least 20 points, and three games with at least 30 points, including a season-high 34 points in an 85-82 win over UMaine Farmington (12/10/2025).
The 29
th player in program history to surpass 1000 career points, Whelan completes his Husky career with 96 career games, totaling 1696 points, 462 rebounds, 249 assists, 131 steals and 34 blocked shots with a career shooting percentage of 50.32 (621-1234), and 103 career three-pointers. He is fourth in career points and seventh in scoring average (17.67).
Galley had an outstanding first season with the Huskies, finishing as the team's third-leading scorer averaging 11.7 points per game while shooting 52.6 percent (113-for-215) from the field overall, and an outstanding 43.8 percent (35-for-80) from three-point range. The Huskies' rookie came off of the bench in each of the team's 26 games and averaged nearly 24 minutes per contest, contributing 3.0 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.0 steals per game. Scoring in double-figures in 17 of the Huskies' 26 games, Galley had a season-best 20 points on 7-for-10 shooting in an 81-70 win over Eastern Connecticut (January 17). He finished his first year with 305 points, 79 rebounds, 33 assists, 27 steals.
Southern Maine finished the 2025-26 season with a 16-10 overall record and an 11-5 mark in Little East Conference action – the most wins in conference play in program history. Earning the fourth seed in the Little East Conference tournament, Southern Maine qualified for the conference playoffs for the fifth consecutive season.
