Southern Maine’s Galley, Whelan Earn Weekly Honors from Maine Men’s Basketball Coaches & Writers Association


GORHAM, Maine   -  After a 2-0 week in Little East Conference action, University of Southern Maine men's basketball guards senior Thomas Whelan (Bronx,  NY/Fordham Prep) and freshman Carter Galley (Owls Head, Maine/Oceanside) have been recognized by the Maine Men's Basketball Coaches and Writers Association (MMBCWA) with weeky honors.  Whelan was named the co-Player of the Week, while Galley was named the co-Rookie of the Week.  Both Whelan and Galley are being honored by the MMBCWA for the second time this season.
 
Recently named the Little East Conference Rookie of the Week,  Galley was instrumental in the Huskies' two wins over UMass Dartmouth and Eastern Connecticut with valuable contributions in a reserve role averaging 16.0 points, 3.0 rebounds per game while shooting an outstanding 70.6 from the field (12-for-17).  In a 95-89 win over UMass Dartmouth in a midweek contest, Galley played 21 minutes, shooting 5-for-7 overall from the floor and 2-for-3 from three-point range for 12 points.  The Huskies' guard added three rebounds, an assist and a steal, scoring eight of his 12 points in the second half. Galley scored a career-high 20 points in the Huskies' 81-70 win over Eastern Connecticut on Saturday.  Playing 30 minutes, Galley was a remarkable 7-for-10 from the field (2-for-3 form three) and 4-for-4 from the free throw line for his career-high mark.  He added three rebounds and a steal.  Playing in each of the Huskies' 16 games this season, Galley is the Huskies' third-leading scorer averaging 11.8 points per game while shooting 52.8 percent from the field and 40.4 percent from three.  He is chipping in with 3.1 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per contest.   
 
The Huskies' leading scorer, Whelan averaged 25.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.0 steals per game while shooting 52.9 percent from the field and 37.5 percent from three-point range.  Playing all 40 minutes against UMass Dartmouth, Whelan had 28 points, seven rebounds, four assists and two blocked shots on 12-for-18 shooting.  Against Eastern Connecticut, Whelan had 23 points and five rebounds.  Playing and starting in each of the Huskies' 16 games, Whelan is averaging 22.4 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 1.8 steals per game while shooting 48.7 percent overall and 39.3 percent from three.  In 86 career games, Whelan has 1500 career points, 413 rebounds, 203 assists, and 116 steals and a career shooting mark of 51.62 percent.
 
Southern Maine (10-6 overall, 5-2 Little East) is on the road for its next two contests at Plymouth State on Wednesday, January 21 (7:00 pm) and Saturday, January 24 (3:00 pm at WestConn. The Huskies currently sit in second place in the LEC regular season standings.
