Huskies Improve to 7-3 in LEC; Remain Undefeated at Home


GORHAM, Maine   -  Sophomore Noah Dowling (North Narrabeen, Australia/St. Augustine's) was lights out from three, shooting 6-for-6, for 22 points and nine rebounds, both game-high totals, as the University of Southern Maine Huskies routed the UMass Boston Beacons 105-63 in a Little East Conference men's basketball game Wednesday night at Hill Gym.
 
Dowling finished the game 8-for-9 from the field to lead five Huskies in double-figures.  Freshman Gabe Lash (Waldoboro, Maine/Medomak Valley) had 16 points, five assists and four rebounds, while sophomore Evans Sterling (New Sharon, Maine/Mt. Blue) and freshman Carter Galley (Owls Head, Maine/Oceanside) each had 15 points.  Freshman Aidan Obrien (Washington, DC/Gonzaga College HS) had a career-high 12 points in just five minutes of action off of the bench, shooting 5-for-6 from the field and 2-for-3 from three.
 
Raphel Laurent had 13 points to lead the Beacons who struggled shooting finishing the game at 27.0 percent (17-for-63).  D'Anthony Amado and Skyler Venezio each had eight points.

Today's game marked the 119th meeting between the UMass Boston Beacons and the University of Southern Maine Huskies. Southern Maine leads the overall series 70-49. With the win, the Huskies split the regular season series with the Beacons. Southern Maine dropped a narrow 77-74 loss in Boston in early December. The Huskies remain undefeated at home this season at 8-0.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Trailing 3-2 after a three from UMB's Carson Meczywor with just 30 seconds ticked off the game clock, Southern Maine's Dowling hit the first of his five first half threes as the Huskies went on to lead the half 50-27.
  • Perkins tied the game up at 7-7 with a layup at the 17:10 mark, before Dowling went on a tear hitting a three to give USM the lead for good as part of a 16-0 run over the next 5:14 of action.  Dowling hit three consecutive threes in the run and the Huskies led 23-7 with 11:56 to go in the half.
  • Perkins ended the dry spell for the Beacons with a jumper to trail 23-9 on the next play, but USM outscored UMB 20-7 over the next 7:11 of action to lead 43-16 with 4:15 to play in the half highlighted by a dunk from Lash on a feed from senior guard Thomas Whelan (Bronx, NY/Fordham Prep). UMass Boston closed out the half up 11-7 in scoring but trailed the Huskies by 23 at the break, 50-27. 
  • USM continued to roll offensively more than doubling the Beacons' scoring in the first 10 minutes of the second half, 36-15, to lead by 44, 86-42, with 10:24 on the clock.  Galley had 13 of his 15 points in the opening 10 of the second frame, while Sterling and Dowling each had seven.
  • Cruising to the win from there, the Huskies had their largest lead of the game, 105-55, with 2:39 to play on a jumper from Obrien before rolling to the 105-63 final. 
 
 
Inside The Statistics:
  • Southern Maine shot 57.1 percent (40-for-70) from the field for the game and was 16-for-32 from three.  UMass Boston shot under 30 percent for the game and went just 5-for-30 from three.
  • The Huskies outscored the Beacons 40-10 in the pain, and scored 25 points off of 19 UMass Boston turnovers.
 
 
Up Next:
Southern Maine hosts Keene State College on Saturday, January 31 (3:00 pm) in the second annual NAMI Maine/Wade Millett Memorial Foundation Games. The Huskies are on the road for its next two contests, both in LEC action, at Rhode Island College (7:30 pm) on February 4 and at Eastern Connecticut (1:00 pm) on February 7.
