Bowdoin Defeats Southern Maine 5-0 in First Round of Lobster Pot Tournament; Huskies to Face Colby in Consolation Game

FALMOUTH, Maine – The No. 13 Bowdoin College Polar Bears defeated the University of Southern Maine Huskies' men's ice hockey team by a score of 5-0 to advance to the championship game of the inaugural Lobster Pot Men's Hockey Tournament at Falmouth Family Ice Center. Jackson Holl accounted for two of Bowdoin's goals, and was one of four Polar Bears with multiple points. Aidan Lyons assisted on three goals, Justin Wright had two assists, and Bryce Bollman logged a goal and an assist.
 
Bowdoin's Jacob Osborne made 23 saves in the shutout victory, while freshman Loic Morin (Drummondville, Quebec) had 31 saves for the Huskies. Senior Conor Donovan (Nahant, Mass./Swampscott) recorded a career-high 19 faceoff wins and led all players with a 19-12 record at the dot.

Series History:
Bowdoin leads the all-time series 28-9-3. The Huskies won last season's meeting 6-5 in overtime in Gorham.
 
The Goaltenders:
Southern Maine: Loic Morin (4-4-1): 59:31, five goals allowed, 31 saves
Bowdoin: Jacob Osborne (6-1-1), 59:51, no goals allowed, 23 saves
 
How It Happened:
  • Holl scored both Bowdoin goals in the first period. His first came 2:47 into the game and added another on the power play with a little over 10 minutes left in the period. The Polar Bears controlled the pace of the game in the period with 17 shots on goal to Southern Maine's four. Two of the shots on goal for the Huskies came from junior Kayde Kinaschuk (Calgary, Alberta).
  • Each team put 11 shots on goal in the second period, but Bowdoin had the lone goal in the stanza with a power play score by Bollman.
  • Bowdoin added two more goals in the third period. The first came from Abbott on a 4-on-4 situation and the second was another power play goal, this time from Alegria. Bowdoin killed five penalties in the period.
 
Inside The Stats:
  • Bowdoin led 26-23 in shots on goal and had a slight 40-39 lead in faceoff wins.
  • Each team committed seven penalties in the games. Bowdoin converted on three of their seven power plays.
  • Donovan and sophomore Ben Thornley-Hall (Coquitlam, British Columbia) each were credited with two blocked shots.

The Lobster Pot continues tomorrow with the consolation game between Southern Maine and Colby College at 2:00 p.m. followed by the championship at 5:30 p.m. between Bowdoin and the University of New England.
