Southern Maine Athletics to Honor Sue White ’92 with Costello Special Achievement Award

GORHAM, Maine – The University of Southern Maine Department of Athletics has announced that Sue White '92 is the winner of the 2025 Richard A. Costello Special Achievement Award. Named in honor of the legendary coach and administrator, the Costello Award is presented annually to a USM graduate who has distinguished themselves through their commitment to student-athletes and athletics. White, a two-time captain of the Huskies' softball team, earned her bachelor's degree in Elementary Education with a concentration in social sciences.
 
White played for the Huskies from 1988-91 and served as a team captain in 1990 and 1991. She played in 106 career games and ranks fifth in program history in career putouts with 594 in addition to ranking in the top 20 for career fielding percentage at .969. At the plate, White hit .274 (74-for-270) over the course of her career with 41 runs batted in.
 
After earning her degree, White returned to her hometown of Caribou, Maine to begin her career as a teacher in the Caribou School Department. She taught at the elementary school level while also coaching Caribou High School's varsity softball team from 1992-2002. White also coached girls' soccer at Caribou Middle School from 1998-99. After a decade in the classroom, White made the transition to the administrative side of education as assistant principal at Caribou Middle School. She served in the role from 2002-2005 before becoming the school's principal, a position she held from 2005-2012. She then held the principal job at Limestone Community School from 2012-2014, and again from 2015-2019 with a stint as superintendent of RSU 39 in between.
 
White made another career transition in 2019, this time stepping into the world of higher education as the Director of Admissions at the University of Maine at Presque Isle. She was elevated to Executive Director of Admissions and Enrollment Services in 2022 and was named Vice President of Enrollment Services in 2024.
 
White earned her Master of Education in Educational Leadership from the University of Maine in 2003 and completed a Certificate of Advanced Studies in Educational Leadership from Maine in 2014.
 
She will be honored as part of the 39th Annual Husky Hall of Fame Banquet and Induction Ceremony on Sunday, October 5 (5:00 pm) at the Italian Heritage Center in Portland, Maine presented by Gorham House of Pizza.
