Salem State Pitching Stifles Southern Maine in Non-Conference Sweep 2-1, 4-0

GORHAM, Maine –   Alanis Toledano and Gracie Martineau came out on top in a pair of strong pitching efforts from both sides as the Salem State University Vikings swept the University of Southern Maine Huskies 2-1 and 4-0 in a non-conference softball doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at Alumni Field.

Toledano held Southern Maine to one run on three hits in game one, while Martineau spun a two-hitter in game two.  Southern Maine hurlers junior Lexus McIntosh (Lancaster, NH/White Mountains Regional) and freshman Mia Coots (Hartland, Maine/Nokomis) pitched well in their respective losses.  McIntosh allowed just five hits and a walk while striking out five in the opener.  In game two, Coots matched her season-high with nine strikeouts in the loss, and allowed just five hits and three walks.

Each of Salem State's runs in the third were unearned as McDermott had an RBI single, Taylor Perryman had an RBI double, and Samantha Goana-Sullivan had a sacrifice fly RBI. Salem State made it a 4-0 game in the bottom of the sixth with an unearned run on a fielder's choice and error.
