GORHAM, Maine – Alanis Toledano and Gracie Martineau came out on top in a pair of strong pitching efforts from both sides as the Salem State University Vikings swept the University of Southern Maine Huskies 2-1 and 4-0 in a non-conference softball doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at Alumni Field.
Toledano held Southern Maine to one run on three hits in game one, while Martineau spun a two-hitter in game two. Southern Maine hurlers junior
Lexus McIntosh (Lancaster, NH/White Mountains Regional) and freshman
Mia Coots (Hartland, Maine/Nokomis) pitched well in their respective losses. McIntosh allowed just five hits and a walk while striking out five in the opener. In game two, Coots matched her season-high with nine strikeouts in the loss, and allowed just five hits and three walks.

How It Happened: Game One – Salem State 2, Southern Maine 1
- Allison Frost had an RBI single in the bottom of the third, and the Vikings scored a go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth following an RBI single to right from Taylor McDermott to defeat the Huskies 2-1.
- The Huskies took the lead in the top of the third as junior MacKenzie Renner (Alton, NH/Prospect Mountain) blasted her second career home run over the left field fence.
- Both teams received strong pitching performances from their starters. Salem's Alanis Toledano held the Huskies to just three hits and four walks in seven innings, and worked her way around a seventh-inning error to keep Salem ahead on the scoreboard for the win.
- Southern Maine junior Lexus McIntosh (Lancaster, NH/White Mountains Regional) struck out five, and gave up just one walk and five hits in the tough-luck loss.
Game Two -
- After a scoreless two and a half innings, Salem State broke out for three runs in the bottom of the third to take a 3-0 lead over the Huskies, and relied on a strong pitching effort from Gracie Martineau to take a 4-0 win.
- Martineau held the Huskies to just two hits in the contest and did not yield her second hit of the game until the top of the seventh.
- The Vikings scored their three runs on three hits, a walk, and a Husky fielding error. Each of Salem State's runs in the third were unearned as McDermott had an RBI single, Taylor Perryman had an RBI double, and Samantha Goana-Sullivan had a sacrifice fly RBI. Salem State made it a 4-0 game in the bottom of the sixth with an unearned run on a fielder's choice and error.
- Martineau finishd the game allowing two hits and two walks in seven innings with a pair of strikeouts for the win. Freshman Mia Coots (Hartland, Maine/Nokomis) pitched a full seven for the Huskies allowing five hits and three walks. She had four runs against her but none of them were earned while matching her career-high with nine stirkeouts in the contest.

Southern Maine is on the road for at VTSU-Castleton on Sunday, April 13 (12:00 pm). The Huskies return home against LEC opponent Keene State on Tuesday, April 15 (4:00 pm), and remain at home on Thursday, April 17 against non-conference opponent Bowdoin (4:00pm). All contests are doubleheaders.
