Beacons Rally to Defeat Huskies 3-2

BOSTON, Mass. – The UMass Boston Beacons scored three goals in the third period to defeat the University of Southern Maine Huskies 3-2 on Friday night at the Edward T. Barry Ice Rink. The Beacons were trailing 1-0 entering the final period and scored twice in the span of three minutes to take a 2-1 lead. Jude Kurtas extended the lead to 3-1 with an empty net goal that went down as the game-winner after sophomore Ethan MacDuff (Lloydminster, Alberta) scored in the final minute to cut the score to 3-2. MacDuff's goal was assisted by sophomore Kayde Kinaschuk (Calgary, Alberta) and freshman Gavin Simopoulos (Cape Elizabeth, Maine). Kinashcuk had a two-point night as he scored the first goal for the Huskies.

Senior Kyle Penton (Waltham, Mass./Albany Academy) turned away 58 shots in an incredible effort between the pipes. His total is tied for the fourth-most in a game in NCAA Division III this season and is the fourth-most in a game by a Husky in program history.

How It Happened:
  • Penton made 14 saves in a scoreless first period while Bost stopped all nine shots the Huskies put on goal.
  • The Beacons ramped up the pressure and bombarded Penton with 25 shots but the senior netminder stopped them all. Despite being outshot 25-15 in the period, the Huskies ended the period ahead 1-0 thanks to a goal by Kinaschuk 11:45 into the period.
  • Jazz Krivtsov blasted a one-timer past Penton on the power-play to tie the game with 9:14 left. Kurtas and Evan Googins recorded the assists. The Beacons took the lead with 6:27 left on the clock on a second effort shot by Jack Mortson after Penton denied his first shot.
  • Kurtas scored an empty-netter with 1:10 remaining to make the lead 3-1. The Huskies pulled their goalie again in the final minute and a shot by Kinaschuk was blocked which allowed MacDuff a chance to fire the puck into the net to make the score 3-2.
