Huskies End Season with 5-4 Win Against Beacons

BOSTON, Mass. – The University of Southern Maine men's ice hockey ended their season on Saturday evening with a 5-4 New England Hockey Conference win against the UMass Boston Beacons. Five different Huskies scored goals including Kayde Kinaschuk (Calgary, Alberta), who took over the team lead in the category. Freshman Finn Ernsjöö (Stockholm, Sweden) scored the first goal of his career and the Huskies also had scores from Zach Desmarais (St. Cyrille, Quebec), sophomore Marcus Torgner (Mjolby, Sweden) and junior John Hagan (Canton, Mass./Tilton School).

Senior Kyle Penton (Waltham, Mass./Albany Academy) made 46 saves to earn his sixth win of the season.

UMass Boston: 10-14-1 (8-12-1 NEHC)

Series History:
The Beacons hold a 28-22-1 lead in the series. Tonight's win is the first for Southern Maine in the series since January 22, 2022 when Tyler Gardiner scored in overtime to give the Huskies a 2-1 win on their home ice.

Southern Maine: Kyle Penton (6-7-1): 60:00, four goals allowed, 46 saves
UMass Boston: Tyler Bost (9-13-1), 57:38, five goals allowed, 30 saves

How It Happened:
  • The special teams units for both team accounted for four of the five goals in the first period. Kevin Sadovsk scored on the power-play 2:30 into the action and the Beacons doubled up the lead 1:07 later on a goal by Jazz Krivtsov. Kinaschuk scored for the second game in a row with a power-play tally 9:06 into the period after getting a pass from fifth-year senior Cole Ouellette (Lewiston, Maine).
  • The Huskies tied the game with a shorthanded goal by Desmarais from senior Azam Jiwa (Calgary, Alberta). Desmarais spun around a defender and beat Bost with some impressive stick work. Torgner gave the Huskies the lead with less than two minutes in the period with another power-play goal. Junior Cole Brennan (Sussex, N.J./ Pomfret School) picked up the assist.
  • Kolye Bankauskas tied the game 8:36 into the second period with another power-play goal that was assisted by Tyler Drummond and Michael Lynch. However, Hagan gave the Huskies a 4-3 lead by tipping in a shot by freshman Isaac Grondin (Yarmouth, Maine) for his first goal of the season with 4:03 remaining in the period.
  • Ernsjöö extended the lead to 5-3 2:29 into the third period thanks to tremendous hustle by senior Jeff Pollara (Braintree, Mass.) on a line change.
  • The Beacons got within a goal with 11:55 left to play on a Chris Repmann goal from Steven Spetz. They pulled Bost in the final two minutes, but the Husky locked down and played tough defense to keep the score at 5-4.
