Michael D"Amico Recorded the Fifth-Best Heptathlon Score in Program History

D’Amico and Burke Place First and Second in Heptathlon at Elm City Classic; Record Top 10 Scores in Program History

WATERVILLE, Maine – Seniors Michael D'Amico (Belgrade Lakes, Maine/Messalonskee) and Christian Burke (York, Maine) were the top two performers in the heptathlon at the Elm City Classic hosted by Colby College on Saturday with each athlete posting a top 10 score in program history. D'Amico recorded the fifth-best score in program history with 4701 points to win the event, while Burke's score of 4526 points now ranks ninth.
 
D'Amico placed second in the high jump (1.84m) and third in the long jump (6.20m) on day one, while also finishing fifth in the 60 meters (7.49 seconds) and seventh in the shot put (9.60m). He started the second day of competition by winning the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.86 seconds. He then placed second in the pole vault (4.45m) and fourth in the 1000 meters (2:55.53) to secure first place. In addition to his new personal-record for total points, D'Amico set personal-best in the 1000m, pole vault, long jump, and 60m dash.
 
Burke placed first in the 60-meter dash (7.26 seconds) and the high jump (1.93m) on Friday while also placing second in the long jump (6.24m) and fifth in the shot put (9.73m). On Saturday, Burke placed second in the 60-meter hurdles behind D'Amico with a time of 9.07 seconds and then won the pole vault with a mark of 4.55m and finished 14th in the 1000 meters. He set personal-best in the 60m hurdles, long jump and 60m dash during the event.
 
The Huskies also sent a group of athletes to the TRACK at New Balance Early Bird Invitational in Boston. Sophomore Marcus Tillery (Windham, Maine) and freshman Kody McCranie (Bow, N.H.) ran in the 200-meter dash, while senior Michael Cyr (Caribou, Maine) competed in the 5000 meters.
 
McCranie ran a time of 22.50 seconds to place fourth overall. He now ranks ninth in program history in the event. McCranie won his heat with Tillery placing second in the heat with a time of 22.79 seconds to finish eighth overall.
 
Cyr placed 13th in his event with a personal-best time of 15:37.62 and won his heat.
 
The next meet for Southern Maine will be the USM Alumni Open on Saturday, December 13 in the Costello Sports Complex.
