Thomas Whelan, Stephen Gabriel III and Diego Colon Named 2025-26 Southern Maine Men’s Basketball Captains


 
GORHAM, Maine – Seniors Thomas Whelan (Bronx, NY/Fordham Prep), Diego Colon (San Juan, Puerto Rico) and Stephen Gabriel III (Brockton, Mass/Bridgton Academy) have been named co-captains of the University of Southern Maine Huskies men's basketball team for the 2025-2026 season.
 
Transferring to the Huskies last season from Franklin Pierce University (NCAA Division II), Gabriel played and started in nine games during the 2024-2025 season before being sidelined with an injury.  An adept ball-handler and distributor, Gabriel averaged 1.4 assists-per-game for the Huskies while contributing 4.0 points and 3.11 rebounds per game. Gabriel had a season-high nine points on 4-for-8 shooting at Eastern Connecticut (12/4/2024) in an 84-73 USM win. Gabriel is pursuing a degree in Business Management.
 
Playing in 44 career games over two seasons, Colon has averaged 9.3 points, 3.1 rebounds, 1.2 assists, and 1.1 steals per game.  During the 2024-2025 season, Colon averaged 24.6 minutes per game while contributing 10.2 points, 3.5 rebounds, 1.2 assists, and 1.0 steals per game, shooting 33.6 percent (50-for-149) from three-point range. Scoring in double-digits in 14 of 26 games played, Colon had a season-high 19 points on 5-for-9 shooting (3-for-4 from three) in a 103-90 win at UMaine Farmington.  Colon is pursuing a degree in Business Management.
 
A two-time second team All-Little East Conference and MMBCWA All-State selection, Whelan averaged 22.1 points, 5.2 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.3 steals per game during the 2024-2025 season.  Recording his 1000th career point as a junior, Whelan was the Huskies' leading scorer shooting an outstanding  53.8 percent (206-for-383) from the field, including a 33.8 percent mark from three-point territory. He scored in double-digits in in 24 of 25 games played, and had 16 games with 20 or more points, and four games with at least 30 points, including a season and career-high 39 points at UMass Dartmouth (January 16, 2205). A two-time William B. Wise Scholar Athlete, Whelan is pursuing a degree in Exercise Science.
