Catriona Gould (Freeport, Maine),
Mia Sargent (Portland, Maine/Deering),
Ashley Sabatino (Scarborough, Maine) and
Emily Johnson (Scarborough, Maine) of the University of Southern Maine Huskies' women's soccer team have earned College Sports Communicators Academic All-District honors.
Members of the Huskies' 2024 Little East Conference Champion women's soccer team, all four student-athletes are receiving Academic All-District recognition after distinguishing themselves athletically and academically as student-athletes at the University of Southern Maine. To be eligible for the accolade, student-athletes must be a starter or an important reserve with at least a 3.50 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale), must have participated in at least 90 percent of the team's games, and must be at least a sophomore academically. Graduate students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher as both an undergrad and graduate student-athlete.
A four-time All-Little East Conference forward, Gould is a three-time first team selection and was the 2022 LEC Offensive Player of the Year. Already the program's single-season record holder for goals (20) and points (47) in a season headed into the 2024 season, Gould finished her career as the Huskies' all-time career leader in goals (58), assists (29) and points (145). A two-time United Soccer Coaches' All-Region first team forward in 2022 and 2023, Gould is earning Academic All-District honors for the second time in her career. Recently completing her undergraduate degree in Biology, Gould is a William B. Wise Scholar Athlete, and is in her first semester of graduate school for a Master's degree in Occupational Therapy.
The first ever USM women's soccer player to be named Defensive Player of the Year in 2022, Sargent repeated the honor in 2023 and 2024, and is now a four-time All-Little East Conference selection, earning first team honors in 2022, 2023 and 2024. One of the Huskies' starting center backs, Sargent holds the program record for career games played with 83. In 2024, Sargent played the most minutes of any member of the Huskies' roster (1720), and turned in 15 full 90s.
Named the LEC's Defensive Player of the Week twice in 2024, Sargent had four assists this season. A Biology major, Sargent is now a three-time Academic All-District student athlete, and is a multiple-time winner of the William B. Wise Scholar Athlete and Little East Conference Fall All-Academic Team awards. She was a United Soccer Coaches' third team pick in 2022 and a first team selection in 2023.
Earning Academic All-District honors for the first time in her career, Sabatino is a two-year member of the Huskies' women's soccer team, helping Southern Maine to back-to-back LEC championships in 2023, and 2024. A forward, Sabatino played in 21 games during the 2024 season, starting 16, and had two goals and four assists. Earning her degree in Health Sciences, Sabatino finishes her Husky career with 43 games played, 23 games started, and six career goals and assists for 18 points.
Transferring to the program from Hobart and William and Smith College, Johnson slid into a starting outside back role for the Huskies in 2024. Playing in 21 games, and starting 18, as a member of the Huskies' formidable defensive unit, Johnson had a goal and two assist in 2024, assisting on the Huskies' second goal in a 3-0 win over WestConn for the 2024 Little East Conference Championship. Johnson is finishing her degree in Biology.
Designated Academic All-District student-athletes are eligible for selection to the Academic All-America program. College Sports Communicators began the distinguished Academic All-America® program in 1952, and since then, has honored more than 38,000 deserving student-athletes from numerous sports across all divisions with these elite Academic All-America® scholar-athlete honors. Currently, CSC sponsors Academic All-America® programs for men's soccer, women's soccer, football, volleyball, men's basketball, women's basketball, men's swimming & diving, women's swimming & diving, men's tennis, women's tennis, baseball, softball and men's and women's track and field/cross country. Many other sports are eligible through the At-Large program, including USM sponsored sports field hockey, golf, ice hockey, and wrestling).
