Bowdoin Pulls Away from Southern Maine for 5-2 Win

BRUNSWICK, Maine – Junior Zach Desmarais (St. Cyrille, Quebec) scored twice for the University of Southern Maine Huskies' men's ice hockey team in a 5-2 non-conference loss to the Bowdoin College Polar Bears on Tuesday night. Luke Wheeler scored the game-winning goal for Bowdoin late in the third period and the Polar Bears added a pair of empty-netters to seal the victory.

The two schools have now played 39 times with Bowdoin leading 28-8-3.
 
The Goaltenders:
Southern Maine: Jacob Kindestin (0-2-0), 58:38, three goals allowed, 27 saves
Bowdoin: Kevin Clark (2-0-0), 60:00, two goals allowed, 20 saves
 
How It Happened:
  • Desmarais scored his first goal of the season 12:26 into the game by blasting a one-timer past Clark off a feed from freshman Marcus Torgner (Mjolby, Sweden).
  • Bowdoin tied the game with a goal from Richard Davis with 2:04 left in the period. Jackson Holl and Jack Gilligan had assists on the goal.
  • The Polar Bears put pressure on Kindestin early on with 11 shots on goal in the period and saw 10 of them get saved. Southern Maine blocked six shots in the period with Cole Brennan (Sussex, N.J./ Pomfret School) blocking two shots.
  • Gabe Shipper scored on the power-play to put Bowdoin ahead 2-1 following the rebound of a Jack Studley shot that was saved by Kindestin. Jesse Lycan also had an assist. The Huskies tied the game 3:18 later off another Desmarais goal following a give-and-go from junior Jeff Pollara (Braintree, Mass.).
  • Wheeler put Bowdoin ahead 3-2 with 3:31 remaining in regulation and the hosts closed out the game with two empty-net goals to win the game.

  • Bowdoin outshot Southern Maine 32-22 and had a 55-20 advantage in faceoffs.
  • The Huskies went 0-for-3 with a man advantage while Bowdoin was 1-for-2 on power-plays.
