Southern Maine’s Bre Atwood, Catriona Gould and Mia Sargent New England Women’s Intercollegiate Soccer Association All-New England Team

First Huskies To Earn All-NEWISA Honors Since 2005

GORHAM, Maine  –  Seniors Breanna Atwood (Franklin, Mass.), Catriona Gould (Freeport, Maine), and Mia Sargent (Portland, Maine/Deering) of the 2023 Little East Conference Champion University of Southern Maine Huskies' women's soccer team have each been selected to the NCAA Division III 2023 New England Women's Intercollegiate Soccer Association (NEWISA) All-New England Team. The accolades add to a growing list of outstanding honors for Atwood, Sargent and Gould following the conclusion of a record-setting 2023 season.

Recently named the first United Soccer Coaches (USC) All-American in program history, Atwood earned a spot on the NEWISA All-New England first team as the top vote getter in her position.  Gould, a two-time first team USC All-Region forward, was voted to the second team, while Sargent, another USC first team All-Region pick, was named to the NEWISA third team. The announcement marks the first time since the 2005 season that member of the Huskies' women's soccer team have been named to the NEWISA All-Region lineups, while Atwood becomes the first Southern Maine player to earn the first team delineation.

Named the LEC's Goalkeeper of the Week five times in 2023, Atwood repeated as the Little East Conference's Goalkeeper of the Year (2022, 2023) after breaking her own single-season shut out record (12), and establishing a new career mark for shutouts amassing 27 in 59 career games.  Atwood earned her record-setting 12th shutout of the 2023 season, backstopping the Huskies to their first-ever NCAA tournament win, a 2-0 victory over No. 10 Rowan University, making seven saves  - including a penalty stop.

Making a career-high 102 saves during the season, Atwood established a career-best mark in goals against average finishing the 2023 season with an outstanding 0.709 GAA, and an equally as strong .872 save percentage. Owning a career record of 42-10-6, Atwood has a remarkable 0.840 career goals against average and an 85.4 career save percentage.  She is on pace to be the program's all-time leader in career goals against average. A two-time first team All-Little East Conference goalkeeper, Atwood is a two-time Academic All-District student-athlete and is working towards a degree in Exercise Science.

A three-time All-Little East Conference forward (first team: 2022, 2023), and previously the 2022 Little East Conference Offensive Player of the Year, Gould has been ripping through the Huskies' offensive records throughout her career.  Helping the Huskies to back-to-back regular season and tournament championship titles (2022, 2023), Gould led Southern Maine with 14 goals and six assists for 34 points this season. Tying the program's record for goals in a career (43), Gould achieved the feat with a brace in the Huskies' 3-0 shutout victory over WestConn for the 2023 conference title. Already the program's single-season record holder for goals (20) and points (47) set during the 2022 season, Gould is three points shy of the school record (106).  An United Soccer Coaches' All-Region first team forward in 2022, Gould recently was named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District team.  She is a Biology major.

Named the Little East Conference Defensive Player of the Year consecutively in 2022 and 2023, Sargent holds the distinction of being the first Huskies' women's soccer player to earn the accolade from the LEC. A three-time All-LEC defender, earning first team honors in 2022 and 2023, Sargent has filled the roll of center back for the Huskies adeptly. Playing the second most minutes behind Atwood in 2023, Sargent led a defense that combined for 14 shutouts and limited its opponents to just 0.77 goals per game.  Named the LEC's Defensive Player of the Week three times in 2023, Sargent contributed offensively, scoring two goals and picking up a pair of assists. Sargent scored the Huskies' game-winning goal in the program's first NCAA tournament win, a 2-0 victory over No. 10 Rowan. Playing in 62 career games with 60 starts, Sargent has nine goals and four assists for 22 points.  A Biology major, Sargent is a two-time College Sports Communicators Academic All-District student athlete.

The team, which was voted on by NCAA Division III coaches from colleges and universities in New England, is comprised of a First Team, Second Team, and a Third Team.

"The 2023 NEWISA All-New England Team highlights the best student-athletes from colleges and universities in the region," said NEWISA President Tom McGuinness. "These players represent many of the most talented collegiate players in the country. They have pushed their teams to success on the field and we are proud to recognize them for all they have achieved. NEWISA congratulates all these players for a tremendous season."
