PORTLAND, Maine – The University of Southern Maine Huskies women's tennis team celebrated Senior Day on Saturday and honored seniors
Maggie Brock (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth North) and
Jordan Cote (Hope, Maine/Camden Hills) prior to taking on the Vermont State University Castleton Spartans in a Little East Conference match. The Spartans won the match 5-4 and are now 3-7 on the season with a conference record of 1-4. The Huskies are now 1-5 and 1-3 in conference play. The match was played at the Waynflete Athletic Complex in Portland.
At number one doubles sophomore
Abby Emerson (Gorham, Maine) and junior
Rebecca Hamel (Windham, Maine) defeated the Castleton pair of Ginny Trevisan and Camille Jackson 8-2. The Spartans took the number two and number three doubles matches to enter the singles portion of the match leading 2-1. Madelyn Nonni and Natsuhi Onishi beat Brock and junior
Chloe McVetty (Windham, Maine) 8-1 in the second flight and the thirds match saw Olivia Rutkowski and Emerson Jolliffe win 8-4 over sophomore
Muriel Lattin (Litchfield, Maine) and Cote.
Emerson took down Nonni 6-2, 6-0 in the first singles match to extend her singles winning streak to six matches. She finishes the month of September with a 6-0 record in singles play with three wins at both first and second singles. Lattin and
Olivia Vance (Winthrop, Maine) also won matches for Southern Maine. Lattin beat Rutkowski 6-3, 6-1 in the number five match for her third win of the season. Vance recorded the first win of her career with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Jolliffe at sixth singles.
Castleton had wins at third and fourth singles with Jackson beating Brock 6-0, 6-1 and Onishi winning 6-3, 6-2 over McVetty. The match came down to the number two singles match between Trevisan and Hamel where the winner would give her team a 5-4 win. Trevisan won the first set 6-4 and escaped with a 7-5 win in the second set to give Castleton the win.
The Huskies will play Rhode Island College on the road on Monday afternoon at 3:00 pm in their next match.
