GORHAM, Maine – Members of the 2003 Little East Conference Champion University of Southern Maine Field Hockey team are invited back to Gorham for a 20-year reunion celebration on Saturday, September 30.
Huskies' field hockey, the 2022 LEC regular season champions and tournament runner-up, will host Keene State College at 3:00 pm for Southern Maine's first Little East Conference game of the season. Following the game, members of the 2003 championship team are invited to attend a reunion reception in the Alumni Reception Center located in the USM Ice Arena.
The 2003 Huskies finished the season winning a school record 17 (17-6) games and captured the team's first Little East Conference championship. Following the championship, Southern Maine made its first appearance in the NCAA tournament since 1992, and the program's fifth all-time, falling in double-overtime to defending National Champion Rowan University 2-1.
Three members of the 2003 team earned NFHCA All-Region honors, including current Husky Hall of Fame and Little East Conference Hall of Fame members Renee Heath Towne and Jesse Superchi Gaudioso. In addition to Towne and Gaudioso, Darci Holland – another senior on the 2003 team – was recently inducted into the Husky Hall of Fame in 2020.
Named the LEC Defensive Player of the Year, Gaudioso, was joined by five additional teammates on the 2003 All-Little East Conference team, including Heath, Holland, Deedra Boudreau, Sarah Dolley, and Amy Ouellette.
Gaudioso made 10 saves and the Huskies converted on three of their six penalty corners to defeat Keene State 3-1 in the 2003 LEC title game. Towne scored the Huskies' first goal on an assist from Holland in the 20
th minute to give USM a 1-0 halftime lead. Holland help to double the advantage in the 50
th minute, finding Kerry Leonard for the score and Holland's second assist in the game. Holland made it 3-0 with a goal of her own, finishing a pass from Heath in the 57
th, for just her third goal of the season. Jen Mason and Amy Ouellette each had two defensive saves in the game for the Huskies.
