GORHAM, Maine – Junior
Ben Drummey (Biddeford, Maine) of the University of Southern Maine Huskies' men's track and field team has been named to the 2022-2023 Division III Academic All-America ® Men's Track & Field/Cross Country Second Team, as selected by members of the College Sports Communicators (CSC). Drummey adds the impressive accolade to a resume that already includes two individual NCAA Division III National Championship titles in the pole vault and four All-American citations.
Drummey's Academic All-America selection is the 15th in University of Southern Maine history and the third for the 2022-23 academic year which ties the program record set in 2020-21 (see complete list below). Currently pursuing a degree in nursing, Drummey carries a 3.80 grade point average. He is the third member of the men's track and field and cross country program to receive the prestigious honor from College Sports Communicators joining two-time honoree CJ Moody (2019 Third Team, 2020 Second Team) and Darryl Whitney (2003 Third Team).
""It's so great to see Ben's hard work in the classroom get acknowledged on an equal level to his athletic successes. As a two-time National Champion, there's no doubt about his athletic talent but he's just as committed to putting in the time in the classroom," remarked University of Southern Maine track & field coach
Rob Whitten. "It's impressive that he can maintain a successful balance athletically and academically, especially in a rigorous academic program such as nursing."
In his career Drummey has qualified for the national championships four times and has earned All-American status each time. This past winter Drummey won the Division III indoor title in the pole vault for the second consecutive year and he once again earned All-American honors at the outdoor championships after tying for fourth. The 2022-23 academic year also saw Drummey win the Little East Conference indoor pole vault title and the Division III New England titles during both the indoor and outdoor seasons. Drummey earned All-Region honors from the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches' Association (USTFCCCA) for the event for both the indoor and outdoor. In his career he has won the LEC pole vault title three times and has earned All-Region honors four times. Drummey holds both the indoor (5.12m, 16' 9.5") and outdoor (5.20m, 17' 0.75") program records for the pole vault.
In addition to his numerous athletic accomplishments Drummey is a two-time William B. Wise Scholar Athlete, a four-time LEC All-Academic Team Member and was named a USTFCCCA All-Academic Athlete following the 2021-22 academic year.
Named to the CSC Academic All-District team earlier this spring, Drummey was eligible for the Academic All-America ballot. Members of College Sports Communicators vote for student-athletes across NCAA Division I, II, III and NAIA who have excelled academically and athletically. College Sports Communicators began the distinguished Academic All-America® program in 1952, and since then, has honored more than 38,000 deserving student-athletes from numerous sports across all divisions with these elite Academic All-America® scholar-athlete honors. Currently, CSC sponsors Academic All-America® programs for men's soccer, women's soccer, football, volleyball, men's basketball, women's basketball, men's swimming & diving, women's swimming & diving, men's tennis, women's tennis, baseball, softball and men's and women's track and field/cross country. Many other sports are eligible through the At-Large program, including USM sponsored sports field hockey, golf, ice hockey, and wrestling.
