Merrill Fires One-Hit Shutout To Lead Southern Maine to a Split with UMass Boston

BOSTON –  Junior Lauren Merrill (Bethel, Maine/Oxford Hills) fired a one-hit seven-inning shutout and drove in the game-winning run to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 1-0 win over the UMass Boston Beacons in the second game of a Little East Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at the UMB Softball Field to earn the split.  Southern Maine fell to UMB 10-2 (5 innings) in game one.
 
THE SERIES:
Today's games marked the 55th and 56th meeting between Southern Maine and UMass Boston.  The Huskies lead the overall series 41-15 with today's results.  Including today's games, Southern Maine is 7-3 against the Beacons in its last 10 matchups. The Huskies also split the 2022 series with UMB.

HOW IT HAPPENED vs. UMB Game 1:
  • Emily Doble held the Huskies to two hits and a pair of unearned runs to lead the UMass Boston Beacons to a game one win, 10-2 in five innings.
  • The Beacons scored early, taking a 6-0 lead in the bottom of the first and then added for more in the third.  Amauri English led UMB at the plate going 2-for-3 with a run scored and three RBI.  Kaitlyn Sawyer also had three RBI for the Beacons on a 1-for-3 effort with a double, while Sydney Sanden went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
  • Junior shortstop Madison Day (South Paris, Maine/Oxford Hills) had both of the Huskies hits in game one with a pair of singles. She picked up an RBI in the second with a single through the left side.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED vs. UMB Game 2:
  • Merrill earned her third shutout win of the season.  Striking out seven UMB hitters and not allowing a walk, Merrill did not yield a hit to the Beacons until the fourth inning. 
  • Merrill also came through in the clutch in the top of the fifth with a two-out RBI single to the gap in right to drive in the lone run of the game.  Merrill plated Day, who reached safely with a one-out single to left and then moved into scoring position with a stolen base.    
  • With a 1-0 lead, Merrill retired the Beacons in order in the bottom of the fifth, picking up one of her seven strikeouts. In the sixth, Merrill remained in control getting three groundouts to work around a hit batsmen, and in the bottom of the seventh, Merrill sealed the win with a 1-2-3 inning. 
  • Day and Merrill each collected one of the Huskies' five hits in the game. Senior Lauren Miller (St. George, Maine/Camden Regional), and juniors Dory Kulis (Georgetown, Maine/Morse) and Makena Mulcahy (Auburn, Mass.) also had singles handing UMB starter Bri Melchionda her first loss of the season.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Merrill is 4-1 in her last five starts. Her seven strikeouts against UMB give her 40 for the season and 151 in her career.
  • Day finished the doubleheader 3-for-7 at the plate with a run scored.  She has 97 career hits.
 
UP NEXT:
Southern Maine remains on the road and in Little East Conference action and travels to Rhode Island College for its next doubleheader on Saturday (12:00 pm).  The Huskies return home on Thursday (3:30 pm) for a non-conference doubleheader against UMaine Farmington.
