GORHAM, Maine – The University of Southern Maine men's tennis team celebrated Senior Day on Wednesday afternoon and honored their two seniors
Ryan Geary (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) and
Jaryd Traverso-Penn (Sanford, Maine). The Huskies played well but suffered a 5-4 Little East Conference loss to UMass Boston.
Junior
Cole Ouellette (Lewiston, Maine) and sophomore
Azam Jiwa (Calgary, AB, Canada/West Island College) lost 8-2 to Patrick Ramos and Ryan Tran at first doubles. In number two doubles action the UMass Boston pairing of Melvin Nina and Maxwell Dill earned another team point for the Beacons with a 8-4 win over junior
Ethan Rudnicki (Levant, Maine/Hermon) and sophomore
Zac Howe (Arundel, Maine/Thornton Academy). At third doubles the Huskies were able to avoid the sweep thanks to a 8-4 win by freshmen
Landon Weaver (Bowdoinham, Maine/ Mt. Ararat) and
Alex Lancaster (Lakeland, Fla./Lakeland Christian) over Grady Friedman and Karsten Bourgoine.
The two teams split the six singles matches with the Beacons winning the first three and the Huskies sweeping the last three. Ramos defeated Ouellette 6-1, 6-1 at first singles, Burke beat Kiwa 6-0, 6-3 at second singles and Dill won 6-0, 6-1 over Rudnicki at number three singles. Howe recorded his second win of the season with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Tran at fourth singles. Weaver extended his singles winning streak to four matches by defeating Karsten Bourgoine 6-3, 7-5. Lancaster defeated Friedman in three sets 6-1, 4-6, 10-8 for his third consecutive singles win.
The Huskies will travel to Vermont to face Castleton on Saturday and the winner of the match will earn the sixth seed for the 2023 LEC Men's Tennis Championship Tournament.
