RUTLAND, Vt. – The men's tennis teams for the University of Southern Maine and Castleton University squared off on Saturday afternoon in Rutland, Vt. with a trip to the Little East Conference Championship Tournament on the line. The Spartans were able to pull out a 5-4 win in the match to earn the sixth seed in the upcoming conference tournament.
The Huskies took two of the three doubles matches, winning multiple doubles matches for the first time this season. The number one doubles pairing of junior
Ethan Rudnicki (Levant, Maine/Hermon) and sophomore
Zac Howe (Arundel, Maine/Thornton Academy) dropped their match 8-3 to Miki Almirall and Phil Kluge but the Huskies had wins at second and third doubles. Freshmen
Landon Weaver (Bowdoinham, Maine/ Mt. Ararat) and
Alex Lancaster (Lakeland, Fla./Lakeland Christian) defeated Jason Lipscomb and Connor Davis 8-3 at number two doubles and freshman
Jakub Suran (Liberec, Czech Republic/Gymnasium Chomutov) and senior
Ryan Geary (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) over Stanley Andersen and Andy Phelan. Weaver and Lancaster finish the season with three wins when playing together.
Weaver and Lancaster also picked up wins for Southern Maine in singles play. Weaver defeated Davis in the number three slot 7-5, 6-2 while Lancaster won at fourth singles over Lipscomb 0-6, 7-6 (12-10), 10-7. At first singles Almirall defeated Rudnicki while Kluge took the number two singles match 6-2, 7-5 over Howe. Andersen bested Suran 6-4, 6-3 at fifth singles and Geary lost to Phelan 6-3, 6-2 in the sixth slot.
Today's match concludes the season for the Huskies.
