GORHAM, Maine – The Western Connecticut State men's tennis team defeated the University of Southern Maine Huskies 8-1 on Saturday morning in Little East Conference action at the Gorham High School tennis courts. Freshman
Landon Weaver (Bowdoinham, Maine/ Mt. Ararat) recorded a win at number six singles for the Huskies. Weaver has now won his last three singles matches.
All three doubles matches went the way of the Wolves. Kevin Tenesaca and Aidan Burke won 8-5 over junior
Cole Ouellette (Lewiston, Maine) and sophomore
Zac Howe (Arundel, Maine/Thornton Academy) at first doubles. The sophomore tandem of
Zach Desmarais (St. Cyrille, QC, Canada/École Secondaire L'Odyssée) and
Azam Jiwa (Calgary, AB, Canada/West Island College) were swept 8-0 at second doubles by Jay Kilcourse and Sebastian Frisch. Third doubles saw Weaver and
Alex Lancaster (Lakeland, Fla./Lakeland Christian) battle hard but dropping the match 8-7 (7-2).
The first five singles matches were all won by the Wolves. Tenesaca defeated Ouellette 6-2, 6-2 at first singles, Burke downed Desmarais 6-1, 6-0 in the second flight and at third singles Frisch won 6-4, 6-1 over Jiwa. Rudnicki faced off against Kilcourse in the fourth singles slot and lost 6-2, 6-2. Harris won over Howe 6-4, 6-0 at fifth singles. Weaver prevented the Western Connecticut sweep with a win over Narcisse 7-8 (8-6), 6-1, 10-6.
The next match for the Huskies will be on Wednesday at 3PM against UMass Boston. Prior to the match there will be a Senior Day celebration.
